Pitches under the trees

  • Peaceful adults-only campsite 25 minutes by bus from central York
  • York Designer Outlet and the Howardian Hills both 20 minutes' drive
  • Sheltered dog-friendly pitches with an on-site café and gift shop
Up for a dog walk along a bubbling beck straight from your pitch, or would you rather spend your days sightseeing in historic York (20 minutes by bus)? Whatever your holiday style, North Yorkshire’s Willow Campsite is bound to have a quiet corner in its tree-sheltered camping field that’s just right for you. Tucked away by two wildlife ponds – where you can spot ducks and occasional kingfishers flitting among bullrushes – tree-shaded Willow Campsite forms part of a larger, adults-only holiday park. Your needs are very well taken care of indeed; you can refuel in the wooden-beamed Willow Farm Café (open daily 9am–4pm, they do a delicious afternoon tea and there’s a souvenir shop right next door), or fire up a barbecue (raised off the grass please). If that doesn’t appeal, make a beeline for the local foodie pub (half an hour’s walk) instead. The site also has a bunch of handy practical facilities, from disabled access and wet rooms in the amenities block to a pot-washing sink and laundry room. Wifi reception can be a bit patchy around the camping area, but it’s strong in the café. This being North Yorkshire, there may be the odd rainy day – but never fear, there’s a cinema and bowling alley at Clifton Moor Retail Park (10 minutes’ drive), or you could console yourselves with an afternoon’s shopping at York Designer Outlet (20 minutes).

What customers say

Lovely, quiet site near York with great bus links. Spotless loos and showers, though a bit of a walk for campers. Cafe's good too. Some feel tents aren't top priority, and a few niggles about shower pressure and WiFi.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked LOVED this campsite. I didn't realise when booking its adults only so it's very peaceful and quiet - despite being so close to main roads. For camping, you're right next to a pond which had loads of high reeds so it feels very private and secluded. All the facilities were always clean and well heated. Everyone we met there both staff and other visitors were extremely lovely people. Would actively look to going again.

Disliked Only down side for camping, the facilities are a fair distance away which heading into the colder season would mean I would likely avoid this site until warmer weather.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Well maintained, quiet campsite, space around other tents. Flat surface to pitch u pitch up tent and ground wasn’t too hard. Has a shop and cafe on site pretty much. Close to York town centre, cost £8 in an Uber one way. Toilet/shower block was really clean. Id definitely recommend this site and I’d book again.

Disliked Toilet block very far away from tents at the opposite side of the caravans. Wasn’t a huge issue for us but might be for others. There was a porta-loo for midnight runs which was very clean but the smell was not the best.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very peaceful campsite. Clean facilities. Would go back.
Easy check in, great a code to get in.
Great communication via email.
Well maintained.

Disliked Shower pressure wasn’t great . How far the shower /toilet block is from the tent part. They do have a portaloo in camping area in high season, no good though if your a big person or mobility issues.
This wouldn’t stop me going back though.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a lovely stay at willow campsite. We liked that there was a couple of bus stop options to head into York. The cafe on site was very good and easy to get a table. The site was very nice and found we didn’t have to wait for showers. We would come back as had everything we needed for our couple of nights.

Disliked The shower was quite weak and so isn’t perhaps suitable for washing hair and it wasn’t clear how often the communal areas were cleaned/checked.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet at night and day, beautiful surroundings, clean facilities and never any queues. The woods close by we're great for walks and exploring. Handy cafe on site. Good location and easy to get to York as bus stops outside of site

Disliked Ground was hard so struggled to get tent pegs in but it had been extremely dry for a while. I would prefer to have a reception to go to on arrival rather than registering on line.

Local attractions

Keen historians might start their exploration of York (25 minutes by bus/15 minutes by car) at the landmark Minster, where free guided tours take in the glittering stained-glass Rose Window as well as Roman and Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the Undercroft Museum. Continue your immersion in culture with an amble around the Roman/medieval city walls, stop into the Castle Museum to see recreations of Victorian streets and book evening events at the Barbican theatre. There’s more rich heritage to be admired at gorgeous Castle Howard (half an hour’s drive), with sumptuous apartments stuffed full of great art from the likes of Reynolds and Gainsborough. National Trust-owned Beningbrough Hall (15 minutes) is a close contender in the arts stakes, with a collection of paintings squirrelled away from London’s National Gallery. Anyone with an interest in wildlife can find plenty to see and do: there are raptor flying displays at York Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes), while a wander in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes) might bring you sightings of deer and hares in woodland and meadows. If your interest veers towards more powerful beasts, there’s flat racing at York (also 20 minutes) and a jumps course at Wetherby (half an hour).
