  • Family- and dog-friendly site in Kirkby Malzeard, six miles from Ripon
  • Harrogate and Yorkshire Dales National Park within a half-hour drive
  • Games room, mobile hot tub and outdoor kitchen on site
If your idea of a top-notch rural break is one that’s packed with scenic strolls and/or bike rides, you’ll be in good hands with a stay at Ivy Bank Campsite. This spacious family-friendly and dog-friendly site on the edge of the village of Kirkby Malzeard is surrounded by the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park not far beyond. There are heaps of fab places to get out for a day of hiking or pedalling around here: Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey and Newby Hall are all within a half-hour drive, and the site owners are happy to pass on top tips for local jaunts too. Fancy mixing all this up with a selection of other activities? Take urban wanders around Ripon (15 minutes’ drive away) and Harrogate (25 minutes) or trade all the rural peace for thrills at Lightwater Valley Theme Park, 15 minutes away. Whatever you’ve selected there’s plenty of space for post-activity chilling out on site, including a family lounge/games room, a play area and a mobile hot tub (extra fee applies). Other handy bits and bobs around the place include a smart shower block, recycling facilities and a small kitchen area with sink, oven and hob housed in a converted horsebox for that true country vibe. Firepits are available to rent for warming up of an evening; if you’d prefer to cosy up in the pub, it’s a mere five-minute amble to the local tavern for a pint or plate of grub. Also in the village are a chip shop and a butcher to supply the bits for your barbecue.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We liked the relaxed nature of the campsite. Electric hookups and very good shower/toilet block.
Cafe was excellent, we probably won’t bring as much food next time, just eat there instead.
We hired a hot tub for one of our days and we really enjoyed it.
The walk to Galphney is idyllic
The pub there is good with a nice beer garden.
All in all a very good campsite with friendly accommodating people. Good value.

Liked: As a family of 5 we have a large tent and there was plenty of room, love that this site doesn’t restrict. All staff were super friendly, the site is amazing, facilities always clean, loved the communal area with microwaves, fridge n freezer. Great little cafe with gorgeous food.

Disliked: That we didn’t stay longer

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great pitch. Loads room. Good facilities. Showers warm. Clean toilets. Cafe was just getting finished when we arrived. Staff were very friendly. Fantastic views. Amenities a short 5 min walk to shops & pub.

Disliked: No chair in shower area, I find it difficult to dress standing and nowhere to sit to dry feet. No dirty water disposal

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean site, friendly owners, nice cafe. Pleasant location with pubs etc nearby. Level pitches available, toilet block central to site for walking back and forth.

Disliked: Noisiest kids stopped at about 10.30pm, not as much oversight in terms of noise as some sites.
Local park is a little run down, not the fault of the site but sold by the site as a local amenity.
Local kids had smashed up a vodka bottle for us.

From the manager: heya thanks for the feedback, we walk around the site at 10 each evening to ensure there's no music or excessive noise and also do a final toilet block check.

I'm sorry the noise was a little more than you thought during the evening, we welcome any guests to contact us with any concerns over noise if you can't chat to the other guests directly we are happy to intervene.

The village play area is a great asset to the site and the village but sadly people don't have the same values these days. There is a current plan to refurbish the play area but like anything getting local funding is a challenge.

hopefully see you again at ivy bank soon

Local attractions

Popular picks for gentle ambles around here include the pretty Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park (10 minutes’ drive), the ancient ruins of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Gardens (15 minutes) and the elegant gardens of Newby Hall (25 minutes), which also has a miniature railway in case of tired legs. Sustenance for such outings and for evenings in can be acquired over at Masham’s Black Sheep Brewery (15 minutes), at Pateley Bridge’s Oldest Sweet Shop In The World (20 minutes) or with a stop for a top-notch tea at Betty’s in Harrogate (25 minutes). Continue the laidback theme of your break with a bimble around Brimham Rocks or a round at the local golf course (both 15 minutes). Alternatively, take the opposite approach to holiday antics and get the adrenaline properly pumping on the rides at Lightwater Valley Theme Park (15 minutes) – there are more low-key rides for kids here too, so it's likely to be a winner all round.
