  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Small, tidy site with access to a lovely village pub and lots of walking. Pitches are generous, online booking and confirmation easy. Shower was surprisingly good :-)

Disliked: Booking easy, but had to hunt around in messages to find out which pitch we’d been allocated as we were a last minute booking. Pitch number was in a text message (which took me a while to find). Maybe something on the board saying something like “Don’t see your name? Check your text messages!” would be brilliant.

Facilities are limited - other reviews point this out. We understand all the background to this and think the site will get rave reviews once there are more showers and toilets available.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely little site very quiet in a great location.

Disliked: The pitch we had was 12B as there was 12A the other ten was directly on the 12 in the middle of A & B so it was extremely close to us I don't think they knew to pitch at the A sign the other thing was in the mens shower/toilet block the sinks are so close to one another only one person at a time at them.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a good review, hopefully our new shower block will be finished soon :-)

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Functional, clean and tidy, toilets and showers were well maintained and clean, small site with no reception building, all correspondence was done with a lass called Sarah on messenger, but that's fine, it's about 10-15 minutes walk to the small village, so not too remote, mite not be a liking to everybody, but we really enjoyed the peace and quiet with the feeling of being remote, thank you

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Everything about this site is amazing! We loved the whole stay from start to finish, we had an electric hook up tent pitch and had no complaints. Generous size pitches as we have a big berghaus air tent. Everyone on site was friendly on our stay which always helps! Only 15 minutes from Richmond where we spent a full day too!

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: I struggle to say what I like. The closeness to home was helpful and the cleanliness of the site was good.

Disliked: Lack of toilet and showers. One only on each side for male and female. The difficulty made worse because there both together so couldn't use the toilet if someone was in the shower. The electric hook up is meant to be 10amp but the whole site tripped and was off for some time. Arrived at 12pm left at 15.30pm to go home electric still not on. Picked up the caravan next morning and took it back to storage. Meant to be there three nights.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
