  • CAMC member-only touring site 10 minutes’ drive from Pickering
  • York and Whitby 40 minutes’ drive; Scarborough 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; views of the North York Moors; optional electric hook-up
Will you find a lucky four-leaved clover among the shamrock at Shamrock Certificated Location? You might, but you’ve already struck it lucky, having found this peaceful North Yorkshire site between the market towns of Pickering (10 minutes’ drive) and Malton (15 minutes). At Shamrock, members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club can park on a spacious, level and well-maintained field with views of the hills of North York Moors National Park. In addition to water and (optional) electric hook-up points (which come with your pitch), the site has a sheltered washing-up area (you never know when you might need a roof with the unpredictable Yorkshire weather…) and facilities for the disposal of chemical waste. If you’re after an award for Best Parent of the Year, you might want to start your holiday by taking the kids to Flamingo Land Resort, an amusement park with thrill rides, a zoo and family-friendly events. It’s literally within walking distance of the site (about 10 minutes), so there are no excuses. (And you can hit the on-site pub while the kids watch the pirate show or an animal display…) After treating the kids, it’s time to treat yourself and the dog, with a hike in the region’s spectacular countryside. Choose between North Riding Forest Park and North York Moors National Park (10 minutes) or the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Or maybe head to the coast: Scarborough is a 45-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Climb aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering for a steam-train ride through the moors. The train makes several stops en route to Whitby, including Goathland (you might recognise the station from its appearance in the Harry Potter film) and Grosmont, where you can take a tour of the locomotive shed. In York (40 minutes’ drive), the Gothic Minster cathedral has stunning stained-glass windows, plus a tower with spectacular views of the city. If that’s too high for you, you can get a more modest bird’s-eye view from the medieval city walls. After your jaunt on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, you might also want to visit the National Railway Museum. Whitby (40 minutes) is a pretty fishing town on the River Esk. On the right side of the river, the 199 Steps lead up to the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, while on the left bank is a memorial to Captain Cook, who lived here before embarking on his exploration of New Zealand.
