Quiet back-to-basics site at Shiptonthorpe edging the Yorkshire Wolds

Wake up to the peace and quiet of East Yorkshire countryside at House Martins Camping, a back-to-basics campsite with a limited number of pitches on an expanse of level meadow. In Shiptonthorpe village, right on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there is plenty of wildlife to see on site, from owls, bats and pheasants to the deer and hares that inhabit the surrounding countryside. There’s no need to leave any dogs at home; well-behaved canines are welcome on site too – and there are plenty of dog-walking opportunities direct from the pitches at this family-run – and family-friendly – site. Barbecues (raised off the ground please) are allowed. No need to bring food for your whole stay, as you can restock at supermarkets and butchers in Market Weighton (five minutes’ drive). There are also cafés, bakeries, pubs and takeaways all within 10 minutes’ walk, and a vending machine for fresh milk at a farm in Shiptonthorpe. If you’d prefer to abandon the car when you set out exploring, there is a bus stop five minutes’ walk away, which takes you to historic York (35 minutes by bus) one way, or Hull (half an hour) in the other direction. The facilities on site include toilet and shower blocks, along with a washing-up area with hot and cold water and a tap for drinking water. There is no electric hook-up on site, but there are charging facilities for mobile phones and power packs. The site encourages recycling; bins are provided. You're also welcome to bring your own firepit, and if you don't have one, the site has firepits for hire and wood available to purchase.

Liked: A beautiful and peaceful site. Paul, Ruth and the girls came to see us to check everything was ok. Very friendly and helpful.
A lovely flat pitch, the facilities were amazing. Good walks nearby and a quaint English pub nearby. Fire pits and wood available at a reasonable price. Would highly recommend this site.

Liked: Loved the friendly people that came to check if we needed anything morning and night, the facilities, the placement of pitches. Grass was lovely and well kept. We were given a fire mat for the fire pit which was lovely.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Nice site, great welcome. Toilets and showers spotlessly clean, and good hot water in the showers.

We cycled in and the host kindly lent us a table and chairs, beats being slumped in a backpacking tent.

Phone charging facility spot on and just what we needed after a day on the road.

Liked: The well kept camping field, well maintained toilets and showers and the very friendly owner and his family (including Buddy the rabbit). hire of a firepit and wood was a bonus.

It was nice to be shown all of the facilities by the owner Paul and nothing was a bother.

The tree swing and Buddy kept my grand daughter occupied for quite some time. Plenty of room to play games in the centre of the field.

Will definately return to explore further afield.
