Sun shining over the shepherd's hut

  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Really nice, clean site. Loads of space for kids to run and play. Heath over the road nice walk.

Disliked: Not a dislike but WiFi didn’t cover the pitch and phone signal non existent, extending it would be really good. A further suggestion would be an enclosed dog area to let them off lead as all walks were lead only.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Overall site was immaculate, shop was more than you could wish, staff very friendly and helpful. Shower and toilets were clean.

Disliked: Ratio shower and toilet facilities was very lacking for the number of guests, this needs improving as 3 showers for 14 pitches is really not enough, also whilst we appreciate the need to save water, the push button showers that only allowed 15 secs per push we found very frustrating. Also mixing of tents and caravans not brilliant as 4 consecutive pitches one side of us all in tents were out with music on all day and night, although they did adhere to the 10pm cut off point thankfully. The post with pitch number on was also not placed in the best of position as it was placed right in the middle of the boundary line making it not possible to put the annex on to the awning, maybe place this to one side or even on the electrical/water point would be even better

Glamping Pod

Liked: We had a lovely few days at Heathside on our 2nd visit. This time we stayed in one of the glamping huts compared to the shepherds hut on our first stay. Both were great for different reasons. Having the toilet in the pod and the little kitchen is a luxury as was the double bed and mattress but we felt like we had more room to store our stuff in the Shepard’s hut. We are looking forward to coming again later in the year with family as it’s lovely seeing the children have that little bit of freedom to play on the park as the site feels very safe.

Disliked: It could do with a few more toilets/showers

Glamping Pod

Liked: Nice quiet location. Plenty of space for the children to run about and they made good use of the football goals. Nice walk around the heath opposite the site. Good location as close to some nice places to visit. The glamping pod was fine as a base for a couple of nights.

Disliked: The glamping pod would benefit from some hooks to hang up coats and perhaps some shelves. Also thought a bin could be provided for general/food waste rather than just having a bin bag on the floor.

From the manager: Thank you for you suggestions
New bins and have been added to the pods this morning and coat hooks have been ordered.
We have thought about a shelf above the sofa, but feel that people would then stand on the sofa to get to it!

Overall, a very enjoyable stay and we would definitely return.

Glamping Pod

Liked: We were a family of 4 [children 10 + 13] staying in a clamping pod - space was cosy, but manageable. Pod had everything we needed for our two night stay - microwave, mini fridge [has a small freezer, useful for freezer blocks], kettle, dining table/chairs, sofa. Bathroom decent size for the space. Small bar of soap provided, as well as two toilet rolls. Clean and tidy. Small heater provided. Wifi was ok - but did drop in and out a bit. Picnic table outside the pod. Site was quiet, lots of space for children to play - football goals, basket ball hoop, table tennis table and small swing/slide. Well stocked shop.

Disliked: Suggestions: a couple of coat hooks would be useful, additional shelf above sofa.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Lovely location, nice site, clean and tidy, warm, and well suited to my needs. Peaceful (at least in March!) Well-stocked shop, and friendly local pub down the road (but double check opening hours before you go).

Disliked: The sofa beds are, as others have noted, not the most comfortable! Very thin and not a great design. I solved this by using both 'mattresses' on top of each other on the floor, but if there's more than two of you, this won't be an option.

The simple shepherd's huts of the kind I stayed in are 'utilitarian' rather than 'cosey' or 'cute', but they're also value for money, especially if there's more than one of you. Horses for courses :)

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherd huts now have a small fridge, microwave and shelving units and a good heater, along with the kettle and toaster. Despite it being a chilly February we were warm as toast. Site is lovely, showers and toilets very clean and warm. Loads of outdoor space, great for walking, or sitting taking in the lovely Suffolk sky. Great base for exploring the seaside and all that Suffolk has to offer.

Disliked: Nothing. Heathside is great value for money. The WiFi isn’t brilliant but that’s a bonus.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
