  • Small, friendly campsite on a family-run Gloucestershire farm
  • A 15-minute drive to Gloucester; 20 minutes to Cheltenham
  • Established site since 1946; easy access from the M5
There’s been a campsite at Gables Farm Touring and Camping since way back in 1946… and with a history like that, you can be sure the team here have learnt a thing or two along the way about what makes a good place to stay. The essence of this small, family-run Gloucestershire site is to keep things simple but well done. Bathroom facilities are bright, clean and spacious, with toilets and showers, and there’s also a washing-up area and chemical disposal point for guests to use. And because no good day ever started without a decent breakfast, you can also pick up fresh free-range eggs on site too. Of course, it helps that this is a rather fine location too: in the Severn Vale about 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Gloucester, and close to the western edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site is just off the A38 and with easy access from the M5 (both northbound and southbound), so getting out and about should be straightforward. Eats and drinks should be in good supply around here, too – if you don’t fancy the trip to Gloucester there are pubs in Whitminster (two minutes’ drive) and Frampton on Severn (10 minutes), or you could venture to the lovely town of Stroud (15 minutes).

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: There was a nice friendly welcome when we arrived for the bank holiday weekend.
We were shown to our pitch and everything was explained to us clearly.
The couple in charge were really helpful for the duration of our stay.
Like the gated entrance and exit.
It felt safe and secure.
The toilets and shower block were spotless with plenty of space to hang your things and get changed.
There was a bus stop a few hundred yards away from the entrance so you could go to stroud one direction and gloucester the other.
It took about half an hour to get there and was £3 one way per person.
This was great as we could leave the motorhome on the site and enjoy our day with no driving.
It was a nice quiet site and we really enjoyed our stay.
Would highly recommend.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Contact was made prior to arrival and ETA checked and instructions given. On arrival there is a large electric gate operated with a fob which you are given. We were escorted to the pitch and shown where everything was. There is a spotless toilet block with spacious rooms and excellent facilities. There are chickens on site and eggs for sale. Though on grass in a field Our pitch was level and the site was very quiet noise wise even though it was busy. Departure was set to be 11am but we were awaiting a call from 111 due to health issues. My husband went to advise the wardens who said this was not an issue to wait as long as necessary and also they gave us names and addresses of other medical facilities. They couldn’t have helped enough and I wouldn’t hesitate to use this site again. We used it as a stopover for heading south it is very close to the M5.

Disliked: I couldn’t fault it.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Greeted by Sam, who was friendly, helpful and informative re: public transport. Which is handy for those that have larger motor homes….and struggle re: parking height restrictions.
There is a bus stop either side of the road, which you can visit Stroud and Gloucester.

Gated site off the main road A38, expect some road noise, it didn’t bother us.
Felt safe knowing no-one could enter without access key.

Lovely spacious pitches, with beautiful views of the hills and landscape.

One of the best toilets and hot shower facilities, new, modern and spotlessly clean laundry and washing up area was also spotless!

Would happily return and definitely recommend.

Local attractions

Keen to experience a bit more of that farming life? Take the kids to Cattle Country Farm Park (15 minutes’ drive) for hands-on activities with the lambs, goats, pigs and rabbits plus all sorts of other fun things including miniature golf, a splash pool, a maize maze and a couple of play barns. Meanwhile, if you prefer open spaces and wildlife, head to WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre (15 minutes) to see what kind of birds you can spot. Around these parts are also several smart rural estates – if you’ve got an eye for a fancy historic house, aim for 12th-century Berkeley Castle or the 19th-century Gothic splendour of Woodchester Mansion (both 20 minutes). Green-fingered guests may instead prefer a wander along the paths of Painswick Rococo Garden (20 minutes). Gloucester (15 minutes) and Cheltenham (20 minutes) are both worth a visit while you’re in the area – and in between the two is the Jet Age Museum (20 minutes), with a fab collection of vintage planes and other aviation memorabilia.
