  • Dog-friendly glamping site 50 minutes’ drive from Toledo
  • Méntrida five minutes’ drive; El Escorial one hour and five minutes
  • Private kitchen, bathroom and decking area for each bell tent
If you were to draw loose diagonal lines across Spain, chances are they would meet around Méntrida, in a rural corner of Castile-La Mancha. And a handful of kilometres (three, to be exact) to the south-west of this small town is Unalome Glamping, a dog-friendly site with well-equipped bell tents. How well equipped, you ask? Well, every spacious and climate-controlled bell tent features a real bed, cosy seating and stylish touches – from Moroccan-inspired bedside tables to fairy lights. You also have your own private decked terrace with reclinable chairs and spectacular views of the countryside and distant mountains. And Unalome also has an ace up its sleeve: each tent comes with its own modern kitchen and bathroom cabin (with a microwave, grill and fridge freezer; and a hot-water shower, colourful ceramic sink and fluffy towels). All of which puts peaceful Unalome firmly in glamping territory (just as the name says). Want to make the most of that private kitchen? Stock up on ingredients at Méntrida (five minutes’ drive), where there are also a handful of restaurants and bodegas – that’s right, Méntrida is a recognised wine region producing delicious (and mostly red) wines. When it’s time to take the family pet for a walk, head to the Senda Ecológica de El Romeral (15 minutes), with a circular 90-minute trail; or to the Explanada de la Chopera (20 minutes). Both skirt a body of water (respectively the rivers Arroyo Grande and Rio Alberche), so your dog has an opportunity to cool down, too.

Local attractions

Long famed as a sword-making centre, Toledo (50 minutes’ drive) sits on a hill overlooking the river Tagus. The highest point in the city is the Alcázar, an imposing fortress anchored at each corner by a spired turret. Museums in and around the Alcázar explore the history of the Spanish armed forces and the artworks of the painter El Greco. On the outskirts of Toledo, Puy du Fou España (one hour) is an amusement park with a difference: instead of thrill rides, you get immersive experiences into the history of Spain, with shows such as birds of prey displays and jousting tournaments, plus a night-time extravaganza full of special effects. Built in the 16th century by King Philip II, the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (one hour and five minutes) is said to be the world’s largest Renaissance building. It is certainly huge, containing within its walls more than just a royal palace and a pantheon, but also a university, a monastery and a library (among other things).
