Calling all mountain hikers, mountain bikers, climbers and canyoners… wend your way up to this Sierra Nevada site for easy access to all your fave outdoorsy pursuits, with some rather scenic surrounds thrown in for good measure. Family-run Camping Balcón de Pítres has been on the go for over 30 years, so the folks there know a thing or two about the area and can happily advise on all the top treks and trails around the locale. They’ll no doubt also point you in the right direction for the best eats, drinks and stuff to see and do in and around the little village of Pitres, which is a 15-minute stroll away. Whatever you get up to by day, head back to base to cool off in the outdoor pool (high season only) and follow up with a good feed at the restaurant, which serves up traditional dishes using veg harvested from its very own garden where possible. More self-reliant types can pick up all the necessaries for DIY dinners at the on-site grocery store.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
Pitches: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged €2.00 ($2.92) per adult and €1.00 ($1.46) per child per session.
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Liked: La tranquilidad, lo limpio que están los servicios y disponibilidad de papel higiénico en todo momento. Las parcelas son de hierba y tierra. El restaurante sirve una carne a la brasa deliciosa y la atención es marvillosa. Volveremos seguramente. Gracias por vuestro excelente trabajo.

Disliked: Coincidimos con las fiestas patronales de la zona, así que una noche tuvimos un DJ pinchando hasta las 07:00. Un tostón para quien busca descansar y relajarse. El Ayuntamiento debería mirarse eso ;)

Liked: Great location in the mountains. Clean and and tidy toilet blocks . Showers were brilliant. Ideal for waking and mountain biking . Fantastic views .

Disliked: It says reception open between 9am and 5pm . Turned up at 3pm and found it wasn’t open until 5pm .

Local attractions

This part of the world (the ‘sunny side of the Sierra Nevada’, according to the owners) is crammed full of hiking and biking trails for all sorts of abilities, including some proper downhill descents for brave bikers and some gentler village strolls for folks who prefer a more leisurely pace. Horse riding, canyoning and climbing excursions are also nearby for a different view of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Much gorgeous local plant life is on display at the Alpujarra Garden Association, half an hour’s walk away on the other side of Pitres. On the way back, pass by the arts centre in the village itself to view (and maybe treat yourself to) paintings, pottery and leatherwork made by local artists. If you’re up for a drive of an hour and a half or so, you could also make day trips to the Moorish city of Granada or down to the coast for a beach day at Calahonda.
