- Pitches on a 5000-acre game farm 20 minutes' drive from Estcourt
- More than 70 km of trail on site for walking, quad biking or 4WD
- Outdoor pool and play area on site; guided game drives available
Keen to see some of the KwaZulu-Natal wildlife? You’ll barely have to move from your pitch to start observing the native species at Slievyre Game Farm – there’s an excellent amount of wildlife roaming around this private nature reserve.
About 20 minutes’ drive from Estcourt and 10 minutes from the main road, this game farm is pretty easy to get to – and yet once you’re in, you’ll probably feel like you’ve landed way out in the wilds. The farm borders a small dam and it’s got fabulous views out over the bushveld, plus acacia trees around the place for a bit of shade.
That setting makes this a very attractive place to spend some time – and the local wildlife certainly agrees. You’ll be able to spot all sorts of animals roaming freely here, including giraffes, zebras and antelopes; some 250 species of birds have been recorded here too.
There are about 70 kilometres of trails running through the 5000-acre farm, and as none of the animals are particularly dangerous you’re welcome to explore under your own steam, either on foot or bringing quad bikes, motorbikes, mountain bikes or 4WD vehicles. Alternatively, sign up for a guided game drive with experts who’ll help you get up close to the animals and teach you a bit about them. Recreational fishing is also permitted – the dam is full of bass and tilapia.
Back at the main site, you’ll be able to take a dip in the outdoor pool, use the jungle gym or take the kids to the play area, which has a trampoline and lawn games. There are also barbecue stands for your outdoor cooking, and a covered eating area overlooking the water. A firepit, ablution block and outdoor shower are also available for guests.

Local attractions
You may well spend much of your time here simply exploring the farm, but if you’d like to expand your wildlife-watching escapades, you can try your luck at Weenen Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) and Wagendrift Nature Reserve (35 minutes).
For some different scenery, head west into the Drakensberg Mountains (around an hour), where you can hike or mountain bike through the spectacular scenery or try the Drakensberg Canopy Tour to see it all from above. Dragon Rock Reptile Centre and Falcon Ridge Bird of Prey Centre are worth visiting while you’re in the area, and there are activities including climbing, rafting and quad biking.
Dip into the area’s past with a stop at Spionkop Battlefield (an hour), location of a battle during the Second Boer War in 1900.
