  • Family-friendly eco-site with Retezat Massif views in Transylvania
  • Mount Baleia 40 minutes’ drive and Sarmizegetusa Regia 90 minutes
  • Honesty shop in the lounge, picnic area and garden produce available
When views of spectacular mountain peaks are what it’s all about for you, get yourselves booked in at Camping Baleia, a rural eco-site with a dramatic backdrop of the Retezat Massif in Hunedoara County, Transylvania. Run by multilingual hosts Andrea and Cris and set in leafy meadows by the side of the River Bărbat, this site is a stunning and convenient base for exploring the culture, history and wilderness landscapes of the Transylvanian Alps. Alternatively, of course, it’s also somewhere for doing nothing more taxing than recharging batteries and chilling in the fresh air as you soak up the views. This well-equipped site in the tiny village of Pui has a communal picnic area with wooden seating, and a shared lounge where you can source chilled wines, beers and snacks paid for by honesty box. There are also games and books to borrow for relaxing afternoons in the sun if you’re intent on doing not very much at all – and bikes to hire if you want to up the activity levels a bit. It’s gloriously free from noise, air or light pollution, and the accommodation areas are car-free zones where kids can wander around freely and safely. You can also help yourself to the organic produce – think plump red tomatoes for salads – grown in the owners’ garden.

Local attractions

Hikers grab your boots and head into the foothills around Mount Baleia (40 minutes’ drive), or make for Retezat National Park (45 minutes) for alpine adventures taking in glacial lakes and wildflower meadows. There are also demanding trails in the Piatra Mâțeștilor (half an hour) walking area, with spectacular views over the mountain peaks. Grădiștea Muncelului-Cioclovina Natural Park (20 minutes) is another haven for walkers, with cave complexes among its limestone canyons and plateaux. As well as all its natural attributes, the park is rich in ancient Dacian history, with the amazing mountaintop archeological site at Sarmizegetusa Regia (90 minutes, well-worth the journey) just begging to be explored. Adrenaline-sports lovers can go canyoning and rappelling down waterfalls in Jgheabului Canyon near Crivadia (15 minutes). However, if that’s all too extreme for younger kids, take them to meet the animatronics monsters at Dinosaur World Transylvania (half an hour), where there are also cute donkeys and alpacas to cuddle, zorbing facilities and treetop zipwires.
