Beaches, castles, hikes, days of wandering around Lisbon – if you fancy packing all of that into one break, set off for the Setúbal region and a stay at Parque de Campismo de Valbom. This quiet, tree-filled park is in the hills up above Sesimbra, around 15 minutes’ drive from the seaside town’s beach, shops and restaurants.
It’s a nifty location all round, really – as well as that easy access to one of the country’s prettiest traditional villages, it also has splendid views over the open spaces of the Arrábida Natural Park. Several more beaches (including Galápos and the lengthy dune-backed Meco beach) are within a short drive, and a journey of half an hour or so will take you up to the centre of Lisbon for urban strolls in Portugal’s buzzing capital city.
Along with that fab location also come plenty of options for other activities – take your pick from walks, bike rides, go-karting and watersports, or settle for gentler days packed with picnics, wine tasting and strolls around historic sights.
Got a bit overheated on your day out? Make a beeline for a dip in the outdoor pool (open in the summer months only) before settling in to refuel with eats from the snack bar or something from the site’s food shop. If the nippers still have some energy left in them, send them off to the play area or games room to wear them out before bedtime (fingers crossed).

Local attractions
Active sorts will certainly want to plan some time out in the Arrábida Natural Park (10 minutes’ drive) – hikes and bike rides here can often be planned to take in some beach time along the way, and local companies can be called on to sort days of climbing and caving if you need a bit more adventure.
Rather just get straight to the beach? Head down into Sesimbra or aim for Meco beach (15 minutes) – a long Atlantic stretch with naturist area – or the clear waters of Galápos beach (half an hour). Getting out into those waters for a closer look simply involves scooting down to Sesimbra’s harbour for scuba diving trips or boat tours – or coasteering if you’re feeling brave.
Take a look into the area’s past with outings to Sesimbra Castle (15 minutes) and Palmela Castle (35 minutes) or get straight to the big draw: a day trip to Lisbon (half an hour) to poke around in the food market, admire the gorgeous tiles and ride the classic trams.
