  • Peaceful campsite overlooking Lake Wigry in the Podlaskie Voivodeship
  • Wigierski Park Narodowy 10 minutes’ drive; Góra Różańcowa 25 minutes
  • Restaurant and barbecues; play area, private beach and boat pier
Wake up to the sound of silence and watch spectacular sunrises over Lake Wigry when you stay at U Jawora Camping, 15 minutes’ walk from the sleepy hamlet of Gawrych-Ruda in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. This year-round site makes a wonderful base for active families looking for plenty of sporty things to do and kid-friendly facilities to make life easy on site. Sheltered by mature trees, the grass pitches edge Lake Wigry, placing you steps away from the campsite’s boat pier, from where you can launch your own craft or hire kayaks to paddle around the lake. Alternatively, take a picnic down to the private beach and soak up the summer sun, have a dip in the pristine waters or chill completely in the sauna. As well as a modern shower block, other handy amenities for families include a small play park with swings and a sand pit, a barbecuing area (buy in provisions from the historic town of Suwałki, 15 minutes’ drive), and a terrace restaurant that serves everything from breakfast to traditional ‘kartacze’ dumplings; takeaways are available too if you prefer to eat back at your tent.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Peace, quiet, lake & customer service. Great hotel with restaurant a few minutes walk away.

Disliked: While there was electricity, it wasn't the standard camping, round, 3 pin socket; it was a standard European socket like in a house.

Local attractions

Peaceful Lake Wigry is something of a haven for kayakers, paddleboarders and sailors, with lots of pretty bays to explore. There are cycling and hiking trails leading around the shoreline, and you might like to clamber up the wooden Wieża Widokowa w Kruszniku observation tower (15 minutes’ drive) for spectacular views over the lake to the forests beyond. You can also take to the hiking and cycling trails in Wigierski Park Narodowy (10 minutes’ drive), a protected landscape of lakes, woodland and wetlands bisected by way-marked trails. Keep your eyes open and you may get to spot beavers in the water. The hill scattered with simple wooden crosses at Góra Różańcowa (25 minutes) is an evocative local landmark, and you can learn about life in this quiet agricultural region with a nose around the traditional farmhouse at Czarna Buchta Oaza (half an hour).
