Looking for a peaceful holiday in the Friesland countryside? Then you’ve found the right place at De Kan Hoeve, a relaxed site on the outskirts of De Veenhoop village in the municipality of Smallingerland. Set on a former farm, this well-maintained site is sheltered by mature trees, and its welcoming owners are usually on hand to answer any queries you may have.
Outdoorsy types have come to the right place too, as the site is within five minutes’ drive of the Wijde Ee and Grietmansrak Canal, both popular hubs for dinghy sailing, kayaking and fishing. If you prefer to stay firmly on dry land, it’s also 25 minutes’ drive to cycling and hiking adventures in De Alde Feanen National Park.
There are plenty of walking and cycling routes in the area, whether it's the Pontjesroute, the forests of Beetsterzwaag (from 15 minutes' drive). There's golfing in Lauwswolt (15 minutes), abseiling in Appelscha (35 minutes) and sloops to rent in De Veenhoop (five minutes) or Drachten (15 minutes). Head out for a paddleboarding adventure locally too.
Handy on-site facilities include a modern amenities block, dishwashers and washing machines, and a snack point offering coffee, tea and ice creams for a small charge. There’s a shed for safe bike storage and secure car parking as well as a charging point for electric cars. A shop is also within five kilometres of the site.

Local attractions
As well as watersports along the Wijde Ee (five minutes’ drive), or hiking and biking in De Alde Feanen National Park (25 minutes), there’s a lakeside beach at Smalle Ee (10 minutes) where you can have a refreshing dip and soak up some sun. There’s more fresh air to be had while playing a round of golf at Golf and Country Club Lauswolt (15 minutes), and on a circular walk taking you through the ever-shifting sand dunes at Bakkeveense Duinen (25 minutes).
If you feel like days of urban sightseeing, the pretty Frisian town of Leeuwarden (half an hour) has its own ‘leaning tower’ in the shape of the Oldehove, a red-brick edifice from 1529 that actually leans more than its counterpart in Pisa, Italy. Take a boat cruise along the waterways before exploring museums of art and natural history, and then put your feet up in cafés along the Nieuwestad Canal.
Heerenveen (25 minutes) rewards a visit with an inspiring modern-art collection in its contemporary waterside Museum Belvédère, and the contemporary landmark Ecokathedraal (half an hour), made of up-cycled building materials, is also worth a peek for its maze-like structure and peaceful setting in woodland.
