Pick a plot among the olive and almond trees at Il Giardino di Kharrub, a green-fingered Ragusa province site two kilometres from the island's southern coast and the white-sand beach of Pozzallo. Within a 20-minute walk of the town’s supermarkets and restaurants, this soul-soothing Sicilian site should have everything you need to wipe away stresses and strains. Want to get out and about? Hire bikes on site for days of exploring southern Sicily's wealth of UNESCO-listed attractions on wheels, or simply pedalling off for a cool dip in the Mediterranean. Set in the grounds of a country villa dating back to the 1800s, this Mediterranean scrubland site is speckled with trees and plants that provide plenty of shelter from the midday heat, and the private garden surrounds are divided into different pitches, each bordered by local dry stone walls. As well as making a rather pretty backdrop, Il Giardino di Kharrub has a good list of amenities for guests’ use. Aside from having the bike hire, free wifi and a games room, the site also sells food and refreshments on site (including bottles of water, milk and pasta). Sufficiently refreshed, you can easily take jaunts further afield (by train, bus or car) to in the attractive towns of Modica, Ragusa or Syracuse. If you're planning multi-country travels, you may like to note that it's also possible to take the ferry from Pozzallo to Malta.

Liked: The solitude and peacefulness of staying in a family owned farm (dating to mid 1800s) was amazing...to lie on the soil that has been worked for nearly 100 years...
Owner Stephania directed me to authentic Sicilian restaurant and then let me watch a TV for the world cup rugby...excellent hosting, all for £10

Liked: A due passi dal centro di Pozzallo, si può vivere un'esperienza a contatto con la natura. Caratteristico casale siciliano, con muri a secco, alberi di carrubo, mandorlo e ulivo (ottimo olio!). Caratteristica mangiatoia trasformata in zona living con panche tavoli cucina a gas e frigorifero. Fantastico l'abbeveratoio trasformato in un maxi lavello!

Liked: Bellissimo posto, tra alberi di ulivo, carrubo e mandorlo. Ho posizionato la mia tenda sotto un bellissimo albero di carrubo e mi sono svegliata con il cinguettio degli uccelli… paradisiaco! Consigliatissimo.

Local attractions

Eat or sip your way around the Sicilian countryside, starting with a tasting tour of the wineries in the countryside around Ragusa (a 35-minute drive), stopping in at 14th-century Donnafugata Castle too. To go with that wine, head over to Modica (25 minutes), where you can stuff your suitcases with the town’s organic cold-processed chocolate – one of a kind and free from cocoa butter. Nearby, the canyons and gorges of Cava d'Ispica (15 minutes) have different treats for your senses: the archaeology park here has the deep musty scents of caves and ancient tombs, and it’s a natural museum in its own right with an old Greek gymnasium and catacombs waiting to be explored. For more of the island's history it’s an hour’s drive to the Roman sites of Syracuse, where splendid piazzas and timeworn buildings revive the fantasy of ancient Greece and the island of Ortigia is packed with ancient sights and splendid places to eat and drink.
