Sa Mola

- Peaceful central Sardinia site on a family olive farm in Escolca
- Museo P.AR.C 25 minutes' drive; close to several ancient Nuragic sites
- Olive oil museum and tastings on site; local picnic baskets available
Seeking some Sardinian serenity? Leave the crowds behind at the coast and head up into the hills for a stay at Sa Mola, a peaceful site at an olive farm on the edge of the little village of Escolca.
Here in the Sardinian countryside you’ll really be able to get to grip with a different side of island life, seeking out ancient monuments and experiencing a taste of the authentic agricultural lifestyle. A great place to start with that is right here on site, where you can walk among centuries-old olive trees and visit the museum to learn about the development of olive growing and oil production over four generations at this family business.
Of course, you’ll also be able to sample the oils too, and pick up bottles to take away as delicious souvenirs. And if you need a more extensive meal? Order a picnic basket full of local produce (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available) and take it off for a scenic meal among the olive trees. There are also shops in Escolca and other local villages if you’d like to create your own picnic, and there are a couple of small restaurants and bars too.
Life on site is fairly simple – your main activities are likely to be sunset-watching, stargazing and soaking up the fresh air; and perhaps an afternoon snooze or two? Facilities are similarly simple – there's no running water or drinking water on site, but you will have access to portable toilets.

Local attractions
The area may well feel quite quiet – but people have been living here for many centuries. You can see some hints of that by visiting local Nuragic sites like Giara di Serri, Orroli, Barumini and Isili (among others), or taking a trip to the excellent Museo P.AR.C (25 minutes' drive), where archaeology and palaeontology are brought to life through interactive exhibits.
Staying out in the open air, you may like to explore the sensory gardens at Giardino Sonoro (40 minutes), filled with fragrances and natural musical instruments as well as megalithic rocks and mature plants. You can also look out for some of Europe’s last wild horses with a guided tour of Parco della Giara (half an hour) or pretend to be a giant with a walk through the models of Parco Sardegna in Miniatura (20 minutes).
Of course, where there are olives there are usually grapes – and that’s true of this area, which has several wineries dotted around the countryside. A bike ride around vineyards and other farmland is a nice way to explore, and there are some wineries where you can stop in for a sample and/or a tour.
