Beach by name, beach by nature – getting any closer to the seaside would involve actually setting up on the sand. Yep, Camping Spiaggia del Velluto certainly lives up to its name: you need simply stroll across the road from this Marche site to get to the long swathe of sandy beach (whose name translates rather enticingly as ‘Velvet Beach’). There’s plenty to keep you amused for many an hour on and around that beach: as well as days of sunbathing on the free beach and swims in the Adriatic there’s a watersports school just across the road that can sort days of kitesurfing and the sands are flanked by lots of places to eat and drink while you soak up the sea views. And there’s plenty more along this stretch of coastline to keep you occupied too: the pretty town centre of Senigallia is just under 10 minutes’ drive away (and can also be accessed via a cycle path connecting the campsite and the town centre), or you could keep going north to Pesaro (40 minutes) and Rimini (an hour) or aim south to Ancona (half an hour) for ferries to more far-flung destinations. Other facilities include a laundry area, kids' playground and modern amenities block with hot water. Please note that this site is next to a railway line.

Disliked: Abbiamo prenotato online al Campeggio Spiaggia di Velluto a Senigallia e siamo finiti al Cortina a Marzocca, sapendolo li' per li' al telefono quando abbiamo chiamato per avvertire che stavamo arrivando. "Eh ma voi avete un cane, dovete andare più avanti"... Un'area camping (non lo chiamo campeggio perché non lo è, non c'è neanche uno spaccetto o il wifi) "pet friendly" che di pet friendly ha solo un piccolo recinto di agility e qualche prodotto al bar. Non un secchio per le deiezioni, cacche dappertutto perché hanno il personale che spazza le foglie ma non raccoglie i resti dei padroni maleducati. A un metro dalla ferrovia che al mio cane ogni mezz'ora le prendeva un infarto per i treni che ci sfrecciavano accanto e a noi non ci facevano dormire la notte (ne passa anche 1 ogni 10 minuti, un INCUBO. La nostra piazzola era completamente AL BUIO e di dimensioni talmente ristrette che abbiamo dovuto fare 2000 manovre per entrare (occhio i rami degli alberi che sono piuttosto bassi) e un altro camper addirittura ha sbattuto in retromarcia contro una fontanella rompendo il tubo e togliendo a tutto il campeggio l'acqua per mezz'ora. Tra l'altro in fondo al viale dove ci hanno collocati, c'è un ammasso di roba dismessa coperto da un telone che non faceva passare un filo d'aria e siamo stati con la cappa per tutto il soggiorno. Inoltre, in 25 anni che faccio camperismo è la PRIMA VOLTA che un campeggio ti fa pagare la doccia. Un braccialetto che puoi ricaricare a 0,70€ alla volta per una doccia in mezzo alle ragnatele. Per non parlare dello stato di abbandono in cui versano i bagni. Nella mail ti dicono che non noleggiano le bici perché le puoi prendere a noleggio con un'app, omettendo il fatto che fin qui non ci arrivano e le prime disponibili sono tipo a 4km, a piedi, sotto al sole. Tutto questo per 148,00€ compresa la tassa di soggiorno per tre persone di 6,00€. Mai più.

Local attractions

You may be planning to spend your entire break at the beach but do try to peel yourself from the sand at least for long enough to take a stroll around the streets of Senigallia (10 minutes’ drive away). While up there, roam around the Rocca Roveresca 15th-century fortress, check out the Roman ruins, and admire the architecture at Palazzetto Baviera (and then reward your efforts with an award-winning ice cream from Gelateria Brunelli). If that’s given you an appetite for more history (and more food), make tracks to the Roman walls, cathedral and Palazzo Malatestiano in Fano or set off to the sunflower-lined streets around Corinaldo. Both are about half an hour away by car. And although the local towns make for very fine wanders, the natural spaces shouldn’t be ignored: Monte San Bartolo and Monte Conero natural parks are both about 40 minutes’ drive away, and the fab Frasassi Caves (among Europe’s biggest karst cave systems) can be reached in 50 minutes.
