  • Five minutes' walk from the town centre of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château
  • Regular events in summer such as pizza/paella and karaoke evenings
  • Heated pool and paddling pool surrounded by sun loungers
A pretty stunning setting awaits at the peaceful Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes site of Camping de la Belle Etoile: it's five minutes' stroll from the centre of the splendid old town of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château. A famed medieval centre, around 40 shops and a huge Friday morning market are all here in town, along with an international pétanque and boules museum showcasing the origins of the game (as you may have noticed, pétanque is everywhere in France, so do amble along to find out more…) Around the region, Camping de la Belle Etoile's Loire department location is between Lyon, Clermont Ferrand and Saint Etienne, 850 metres above sea level and about an hour and 10 minutes' drive from the lace-laden city of Le Puy-en-Velay. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, a via ferrata route and a fishing lake are all available nearby. You'll find most of what you need food and vino-wise in Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, but takeaways are available in high season on site if you don't care to stir even that far, and a kiosk sells drinks, ice cream and other sweet stuff. Facilities at this smartly modern park include a heated pool and a paddling pool (both open during summer), a tennis court and a ping pong table. Pizza/paella evenings are organised during the summer holidays: there's karaoke too, so get your best warbling voice in full swing before you arrive…

Power optional grass campsite

Liked We had a good welcome at this site, in fact the manager went to great lengths to help us when we were in need of a replacement tyre for our caravan, researching where we could pick one up as we left the site.
Unfortunately the weather was poor for the 2 days we were here, so we didn’t get to use the pool or other outdoor facilities. The toilet/shower block was good, clean, well equipped.
The town of Chateau le bonnet was within a ten minute walk, it had lots of old, quaint buildings, shops, a bar and great viewpoint from the church at the top of the hill.
We drove out to explore the Loire valley from the site- half an hour drive to many lovely places, Chalmes and Bas en Basset.

Disliked The electricity kept tripping out, we were told it was because of the 6 amp connection. We had no problems on other similar sites, though.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. It was very unfortunate about the tyre , glad we could be of help. Hopefully you will visit us again and you will get to enjoy the pool and our terrace:).

Have a wonderful summer.

Kind regards,
Ronald and Ellen

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Super accueil, on nous avait prévu des emplacements regroupés.
Camping très bien tenu et très propre. Belle piscine.

Disliked C'est vrai que du papier dans les WC serait un plus........

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Bonsoir,

Bien cordialement,
Ronald et Ellen

A nice surprise for us, & the shaded pitch was welcome too.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The staff (Linda and Rolland) were extremely helpful and friendly. We had a flat tyre and Rolland made arrangements on our behalf to get the tyre fixed by a local garage at a reasonable price. The site has plenty of green spaces and is evolving into a very family friendly site, where dogs are welcome too. The facilities are modern and the site is clean and well kept. The surrounding area and village seems to have a lot to offer and there was a market when we were there in the town centre and it is vibrant. Linda is a lovely host, was a very good listener and was fun to chat with.

Disliked Nothing really however, you need to be aware to bring your own toilet paper, and the electric hook up on site uses the French 2 pin connection rather than the Blue Euro connector commonly used in the UK & Ireland, so bring a conversion plug.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Glad we could be of help. Hopefully during the Summer holidays lots of families find their way to our camp site.

Kind regards,
Ronald and Ellen aka Lynda :)

Power optional grass campsite

Liked What a gem of a find!! Ellen & Ronald are so friendly and helpful. Arrival was easy especially since Ellen speaks several languages - Dutch, French & English to begin with. The site looks well and the amenities are clean and in working order (as in most places in France don’t forget to take your own toilet roll). The area is stunning with a little village just above the campsite and a SuperU just down the road. We missed the market but we’re told by another couple it was really good - lots of leather wear. So if you are looking for a quiet little retreat this is the one! Enjoy.

Disliked ????

From the manager: Good morning,

What a great way to start a Sunday morning with such a nice review. Thank you very much. Hope you will visit again and visit the market on Friday morning:)

Ronald and Ellen

Power optional grass campsite

Liked A great little campsite, super friendly and helpful site owners, toilets and showers have just been updated and are clean, bright and spacious.
Touring pitches are a good size, plenty of space to sit and relax.
With its beautiful backdrop of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, and surrounding fields, fishing lake and plenty of great dog walks, it the perfect place to stay for a while.

Disliked Nothing

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The friendliness and helpfulness of the owners. They work so hard to ensure your stay is a positive experience. Their own app is really useful for all things on the campsite and visiting the surroundings. They have a good activity programme daily which you could opt in or out of. The facilities were immaculate - showers & toilets kept clean constantly.
The swimming pool provided a refreshing and much needed in the 32 degree heat and the setting was just stunning! 😍 The owners are relatively new and it was clear to see they are working hard to make improvements and satisfy campers visiting.

Disliked Our pitch was a bit rough but we accepted this as a last minute booking on a busy weekend. The owners did explain this upfront and explained they were in the process of enhancing the site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for your kind words. We are going to improve some more pitches as soon as the campsite is closed for the season. Kind regards, Ronald and Ellen

Liked This campsite sits in a stunning location at the foot of the hill top town of St-Bonnet-Le-Chateau. It is a perfect little site with lovely bar, pool & boules area. The facilities are clean and modern. The owners are super friendly and were very helpful when we had a medical emergency. The area is beautiful with lots to see and do. We would love to come back to spend more time exploring the area.

Local attractions

Saint-Bonnet-le-Château has a famed old district that's well worth a lengthy meander around: look out for the medieval and Renaissance houses, and the Gothic church showcasing murals dating from the 15th century. Three good museums are in town too, including that pétanque one; do roll along to see. Visit Le Puy-en-Velay, the main city of the Haute-Loire famed for its lace quarter and UNESCO-listed 11th-century cathedral (an important stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route). Saunter the streets of Chamarlenc and Pannessac to see picture-perfect old houses; explore the eclectic collections of the Crozatier Museum, dedicated to archaeology, objets d'art, science and technology, ethnography and natural sciences; or climb Corneille Rock for a spectacular view across the town and surrounding countryside. Less cultural and more heady times can be had closer to base with a trip to Usson Adventure Park, 20 minutes' drive away, for aerial adventures among the trees and zipwires.
