  • Quiet family-friendly Drôme site three minutes' drive from Manthes
  • Palais Idéal 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Safari de Peaugres
  • Heated pool on site, plus summer snack bar with wood-fired pizzas
It’s all about providing comfortable, fun and affordable family holidays at Camping Les Avenières, whether you’re passing through for a single night or staying put for a longer break. This friendly Drôme site is in a lovely quiet and green setting a couple of kilometres from the little town of Manthes, so it’s got handy nearby amenities (including restaurants and a supermarket) as well as that chilled-out rural atmosphere. In fact, this is a very well placed site for all sorts of days out as well, whether you’re planning to hike in the nearby Pilat Regional Natural Park, tour traditional villages or visit attractions like the Palais Idéal (10 minutes’ drive away) and Safari de Peaugres (half an hour). Manthes also has the bonus of the ‘Alix the calopteryx’ scavenger hunt for kids to try out. Everything on site has been designed with family holidays in mind – from the leisure facilities (a heated outdoor pool, a trampoline, a playground and a pétanque court) to the fact that no vehicle movements are allowed between 10pm and 7am to allow everyone to sleep soundly. Practical facilities are plentiful at Les Avenières – it has bike hire, wifi, a launderette and a dog-sitting service for those days out where your furry friend can’t join you. Reception sells snacks, ice creams and drinks, and the snack bar opens up a couple of evenings per week in summer for wood-fired pizzas, cheese and charcuterie platters and other dishes, all followed by homemade desserts.

Nature primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome. Large pitch. Beautiful surroundings. Cheap.

Disliked: Basic facilities. Train line near ( it was not audible in the campervan). Staff cleaned swimming pool with jet wash all day (Saturday/Sunday), which was very noisy.

Local attractions

One of the real must-visits around here is also one of France’s most unusual attractions – the Palais Idéal (10 minutes’ drive), designed and built by a local postman over 33 years and one of the most highly decorated, elaborate and eclectic buildings you’re ever likely to see. Several other major attractions are close by, too – you might like to meet the exotic animals at Safari de Peaugres (half an hour), learn all about your favourite sweet treats at Cite du Chocolat Valrhona (40 minutes) or ride on the steam-powered Train de l’Ardèche (45 minutes). The Cité de la Chaussure (40 minutes) is another intriguing place to visit, if you’d like to see how shoes are produced. If it’s nature-based days you’re after, head out for walks in the Pilat (35 minutes) or Vercors (50 minutes) Regional Natural Parks. Closer to home, you could stroll through the priory, Zen garden and botanic garden in Manthes or explore the streets of medieval Moras-en-Valloire (both villages three minutes).
