  • Hautes-Pyrénées family camping on the outskirts of Lourdes
  • Lac de Lourdes 10 minutes’ drive; Cauterets half an hour
  • Swimming pool and play areas; Thai restaurant and takeaway service
When a family business has been running for more than 45 years, you know they must be doing something right… And in the case of Camping de Sarsan, which has been operating on the outskirts of Lourdes since 1977, you could well say that they’re actually doing very many things right. Current manager Stéphane is the third generation of the De Peyret family to take charge here, and he oversees a Hautes-Pyrénées site that’s a winner in terms of both setting and facilities. Looking at location first, Camping de Sarsan is in a quiet location on the edge of town, putting it within walking distance of both the town’s everyday amenities (shops, restaurants, railway station and the like) and the holy sites that it’s so well known for. Turn in the other direction and you can immediately get out into green space instead, perhaps climbing Pic du Jer or picking up the Gaves Greenway to explore the foothills of the Pyrenees on two wheels. Back on site, there are several facilities that have clearly been designed with happy family holidays in mind. Foremost of these is the swimming pool, which has a retractable cover for less clement days and snacks on the adjoining pool sundeck. Several play areas are on site for younger guests, and there’s a dog park where your four-legged friends can have a run around. Being on the edge of town means you should be able to source supplies and local restaurants easily enough. For something a bit different, the site has a Thai restaurant where you can eat in or pick up a takeaway.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: This site is new to Pitchup, but don't be put off by the lack of reviews. Really very nice site on the outskirts of Lourdes, a 20 minute walk to the town centre. Two toilet blocks, both spotless. Well kept, shaded grass pitches (after a few weeks of dusty gravel pitches elsewhere), very helpful owner with good English. Planned to stay for 2 nights, but added another night as it was so pleasant.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

The big attraction of Lourdes is of course its famous holy sites, which welcome millions of visitors and pilgrims from around the world each year. Whether you’re a believer in the miracles or not, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (40 minutes’ walk) is an atmospheric place to visit. Nearby, you may also like to visit the Massabielle Grotto and the various basilicas to learn more about why Lourdes became a pilgrimage site. The town is also an excellent base for outdoor activities too – you can pick up the Pic du Jer walking trail close by, or ride bikes on the easygoing greenway along the former railway line to Argelès-Gazost. There’s more hiking and biking around the Massif du Pibeste-Aoulhet (10 minutes’ drive), watersports at Lac de Lourdes (10 minutes) and a spa town for soothing any aching muscles at Cauterets (half an hour). For a good family outing, head to Animal Park of the Pyrenees (15 minutes) to see all sorts of native and exotic beasts, including red pandas, lynx, bears and lots of colourful birds.
