  • Dog-friendly pitches in a quiet area of the Meuse countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Verdun battlefields; 55 minutes from Metz
  • Rural walks nearby; a 10-minute drive to shops and restaurants
Always on the lookout for a peaceful place with a good supply of places to go for a scenic rural walk, and some tasty meals nearby? Pull in at Amelin’Aire, a small and simple site tucked away in a quiet part of the Meuse countryside. This relaxed Lorraine location is just a 25-minute drive from the river Meuse and the splendid city of Verdun where leafy riverside streets are filled with characterful cafés and restaurants. Verdun's Old Town is home to a Gothic cathedral, a museum and an art gallery, so if you like to work up an appetite with a good bit of sightseeing, that's sorted. The city isn't far off, but staying at Amelin’Aire means that you have countryside on all sides, so you'll be able to get out and explore the rural lanes easily enough while you're here (and your dog is welcome to join you too). It's all very rural and peaceful, but the site is still only a 10-minute drive from local shops and restaurants should you want to pick up supplies or wine and dine. This is also a prime base for those interested in the historic Battle of Verdun fought in 1916. It’s a 20-minute drive from the Verdun battlefield, including the Trench of Bayonets, forts and the Verdun Memorial Museum. The setup on site is fairly simple, with just picnic tables and some low-level lighting to help you find your way around after dark; please note there are no toilets or showers provided.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Rustige ruime plaats.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Very clean and tidy and pretty.
Electric hook up close by.
Lady was lovely.

Disliked: Farm was very loud and smelly from very early in the morning with strange machine droning noise.
Passers by tend to look as on main road.
No amenities not even a bin.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Excellent site for an overnight stay. The owner was extremely friendly. This is a perfect location when travelling in France. The site is clean and quiet; it is by a main road but is not too busy. Fresh croissants and baguettes sold for the small hut on site in the morning.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Set in French countryside nearby historic sites. Nice gravel pitch with electricity.

Disliked: Although in the countryside it’s set beside a very busy road and working farm. Noisy from early on. If all you need is a place to park and electricity then it’s perfect for one night. If you want to be woken by a French cockerel, cows, machinery set to the toll of church bells from around 6am then, go for it.

Local attractions

This area saw a lot of action during World War I, and there are a couple of intriguing historic remnants to seek out while you're out exploring the local countryside. These include the eerie structures of Camp Marguerre (15 minutes’ drive) and the stark concrete walls of Trench of Bayonets (20 minutes). A wander around the destroyed village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont (25 minutes) is also a sobering experience. To learn a little bit more about how the war unfolded here, stop in at the Verdun Memorial (20 minutes) en route to Verdun itself (25 minutes). Once you're in the city, head underground to the historic citadel, visit the cathedral and take walks along the banks of the Meuse. For other days out, take a walk around Longuyon (20 minutes) to see the Romanesque-Gothic church before taking a swim in the pool, or spend some time learning about ancient crafts at Les Vieux Métiers (20 minutes). A day out in Metz (55 minutes) is also a good bet, to take in attractions from the Gothic cathedral to the ultra-modern Centre Pompidou-Metz.
