Make some time to slow down for a stay at Camping Les Drouilhèdes, five minutes’ drive from Peyremale – the owners of this Gard campsite, Laurence and Xavier, are big fans of ‘slow tourism’ and will encourage you to relax fully while you’re staying here. And it’s a fine spot indeed for relaxation – the shaded pitches here are tucked away among the trees at a site that runs down to a private beach on the banks of the Cèze river, where you can paddle or swim in the cool water or chill out in a deckchair while the kids play on the inflatable slide. You’re welcome to bring along a barbecue if you wish, but if you’d really like to take it easy there are plenty of eating options on site, including a traditional restaurant (open in the evenings), a snack bar for less formal eats and takeaways and a bar for ice creams and smoothies as well as hot and cold drinks. Slowing down is an excellent approach here, but if you or members of your family require a bit more activity they’ll be well catered for – the site has a playground for junior guests and a multi-sports ground for games of football, badminton, basketball and tennis. There’s also a volleyball court near the private beach, a pétanque court, ping-pong tables, a giant chessboard, miniature golf, table football and billiards. During high season, there are kids’ activities every weekday morning, and themed evenings to give guests the chance to get together in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Major sporting events and big-name concerts are often streamed too.

Local attractions

How might a leisurely stroll around a château fit with your slow-holiday plans? There are plenty of options around – perhaps you’d like to walk on the ramparts of Château de Montalet (20 minutes’ drive), climb a hill to Château le Cheylard d'Aujac (25 minutes) or see the ruins of Château de Banne (half an hour) before a wander around the village of the same name. Stepping a little further back in time, there are prehistoric relics at Dolmen Table de Turcs (45 minutes) and all sorts of interactive dino-themed activities to get stuck into at Dinopedia Parc (35 minutes). And of course the natural landscape is quite a draw too, whether you head out for a hike in the Cévennes National Park or delve below the surface to explore the area’s caves – Aven d’Orgnac (45 minutes) is the most famous, but Grotte de la Cocalière (25 minutes) and Grotte de la Salamandre (45 minutes) are also well worth a visit.
