Scenic forest settings go hand-in-hand with peaceful retreats. And that’s just what you’ll get with stays at Camping La Crémade, two kilometres from Axat, right in the Forest of Malo. Pitch up at this family-friendly Languedoc-Roussillon place and pass your time relaxing in the shade of the trees by day and admiring the starry skies by night. If you’re feeling slightly more energetic, boost lazy days with a game or two of pétanque, table tennis or volleyball on site. There’s a playground and trampoline for the kids, too. Looking for something even more energy-guzzling? Active holidays are just as achievable as relaxing ones, with the varied landscape of southern France putting sporty things like hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing and kayaking all within easy reach. Whatever you choose, it’s sure to be hungry work, so it's handy that there's a good menu of traditional dishes to refuel with at the restaurant back at base. Tuck in while admiring the mountain views from the outdoor terrace, or take your seat inside if you’d rather (there’s free wifi in the restaurant, so you can catch up with the world while there). If you fancy rustling up your own eats instead, barbecues are permitted, and supplies are easy to come by either at the site's well-stocked shop or in Axat (half an hour walk or five-minute drive), where there’s a supermarket, butcher and bakery, as well as bars and restaurants. On-site amenities cover toilets, a washing-up area and a handy launderette with washing machine, dryer and iron (deposit required).

Local attractions

Camping La Crémade is on the path of the GR367 Cathar Trail from Aude to Ariège, so hiking is an obvious choice. As its name suggests, the trail is all about spotting the impressive Cathar castles of Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Montségur, Roquefixade and Foix (they’re all about 40 minutes to an hour away by car, if you’re not here for the hiking). You can take your treks underground with a visit to the Aguzou Cave (25-minute drive), where small groups can don helmets, suits and lights to explore the cave system (there’s no artificial lighting down there). See the sights by train instead, by catching Le Train Rouge from Axat (half an hour walk or five-minute drive) for a journey through valleys and tunnels, around rivers and along rocky landscapes dotted with vineyards – you’ll see some of the castles this way, too. Opt for aquatic adventures with a rafting trip along the Aude river and through the rapids of Gorges de Saint-Georges (five-minute drive). Or choose calmer waters at Axat’s swimming pool (five minutes), with an outdoor pool, paddling pool, waterslide and whirlpool-jacuzzi.
