Such a green, scenic and serene space... Camping à l'Orée du Bois de Montalan is a quiet rural site next to a stream in woodland near Saint-Hilaire-les-Andresis, in a land of walking and cycling routes, swimming and beach basking. Peaceful stays are the name of the game here, but if you're craving bright lights and big city, Paris is an hour and a half's drive north.
Routes for your pedals and your hiking boots are all around this lush Loiret department land, including guided hikes leaving from the site in high season. You can also get watery – and sandy – at the leisure spot of Souppes-sur-Loing half an hour's drive away, where there's a 10-hectare lake, a beach, swimming areas, and canoeing down the Laing river. Or, as this is Loire Valley land, have a historical hol instead around famed old sights like Montargis, Joigny and fab Fontainebleau, all within 45 minutes.
The site has a playground, a barbecue area and picnic tables, alongside well-kept amenities including a launderette and a toilet and shower block with disabled facilities.

One particularly sweet day out in the surroundings is a trip to the Chocolaterie - Comptoir du Cacao chocolaterie in Bazoche-sur-le-Betz (10 minutes' drive), where chocolate connoisseurs can tour the factory and have a go at making their own chocolate. (Yes, chocolate is also for sale here...)
Sweet treats of a different kind are at the Gâtinais Apiculture museum (15 minutes), a living museum of honey and beekeeping on a farm near Château-Renard. Tours all end with a tasting session (tailored towards grownups or kids) and honey of all sorts as well as honey sweets, honey soap and beeswax candles are in the museum shop.
For outdoor days, have hours' worth of swimming, canoeing, diving and fishing at Souppes Leisure Centre half an hour away, or book a guided rock climbing trip to clamber up the nearby crags. Canoes, pedalos and mountain bikes can all be hired in high season.
