- Family campsite on the River Yonne half an hour’s drive from Auxerre
- Saussois Rocks 15 minutes’s drive and Chablis wine châteaux 45 minutes
- Sports facilities and playground; grocery store and riverside bistro
Any takers for a small and peaceful waterside campsite? One sitting on the banks of the River Yonne, with bags of sporty things to do for all the family? And only two and a half hour’s drive from Paris? Form an orderly queue and head for Camping Onlycamp des Berges de l’Yonne. This leafy landscaped campsite is on the outskirts of Coulanges-sur-Yonne and half an hour’s drive from historic, half-timbered Auxerre in Burgundy.
Pitches are tucked in between neatly trimmed hedges and under the partial or full shade of mature trees. Electric hook-ups are optional and if you do plump for power, please make sure you bring a European adapter plug with you.
Now what about those sporting facilities? On site you can take (unsupervised) dips in the Yonne, while a playground takes care of younger kids in need of a runaround. There are tennis and volleyball courts and a mini-golf course adjacent to the site, or you can take family cycle rides along the Canal du Nivernais (five minutes by bike from the pitches).
The welcoming team at reception is on hand to dispense sightseeing advice and help you organise stuff like bike hire. If you’re low on provisions, restock at the on-site grocery store, and if you’re not warming to the idea of self catering, take yourselves off to waterside La Guinguette bistro for burgers and frites plus occasional live-music gigs.

Local attractions
Showing off spectacular and typically Burgundian half-timbered architecture, lovely Auxerre (half an hour’s drive) is also liberally scattered with a photogenic mix of Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, abbeys and churches looming over leafy walkways along the River Yonne. There are cafés and bars tucked into the cobbled old town when you need a break from sightseeing, and antique shops a-plenty if you fancy a browse.
Pretty riverside Chablis (45 minutes) is a hub of Burgundy wine production, where you can happily pass the day tasting fine vintages at one of the many impressive châteaux in the centre of town. Another worthy day trip is to historic Avallon (40 minutes), possessor of a fine set of medieval ramparts as well as entertaining museums of decorative arts and Burgundian period costumes.
If all that culture is not for you, go canoeing or paddleboarding down the River Yonne from the campsite, or get adventurous and try out climbing routes on the limestone walls of the famed Saussois Rocks (15 minutes).
