  • Small and simple site within an Auvergne nature reserve
  • Issoire and Château de Parentignat within a 25-minute drive
  • Kitchen on site, with fresh produce from the veg garden and orchard
If part of your rural vision involves being able to cook with fresh local veg or wander around plucking ripe fruit from the trees to eat as you go… well, you’ll be able to bring that dream to life at La Buse, a simple small-scale site in the Auvergne countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Saint-Jean-Saint-Gervais. The site is located within a nature reserve that’s just on the edge of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, so this is a green and natural environment indeed. And as La Buse sits at an altitude of 700 metres, you’ll get some lovely views out over the forests and farmland that surround the place – if you’re a creative type it’s worth bringing along your paints/notebook/camera to make the most of the natural inspiration all around. Cultivating a closer bond with your surroundings might involve getting out and about to explore some of the excellent walking and bike routes in the local area (maps are available to borrow so you don’t get lost along the way). Alternatively, it might involve staying right there on site – your host Rolf spends much of his time cultivating his veg garden, and you’re welcome to harvest something for your own dinner, followed by some fruit from the orchard. Picking up supplies to go with whatever you’ve harvested on site is a case of travelling to the shops in Brassac-les-Mines or Jumeaux (both 15 minutes’ drive). Back at base, you’ll be allowed to bring a barbecue or start a campfire to do your cooking, although there’s also a kitchen area on standby if the weather’s not so good. The kitchen is part of the ‘bad weather room’, which also houses books and CDs to borrow to pass the time.

Local attractions

Bring your bikes and/or boots, as there are plenty of places to get out for a cycle or a hike nearby. And maybe it’s an idea to pack your swimmers too, so you can take a dip in the Allier river or in the lake at Vernet-la-Varenne (15 minutes’ drive). There are gems under these landscapes, you know… and if you’d like to find out more about that, take a trip to Améthystes d'Auvergne - Les mines de Pégut (10 minutes) and/or Musée de la Mine de Brassac-les-Mines (20 minutes). Meanwhile, if it’s local animals you’d rather get to know, set your sights instead on Animal Park Auvergne (35 minutes). For other days out you may like to take a tour of Château de Parentignat (20 minutes) or Château de Villeneuve-Lembron (half an hour), or simply have a wander around local towns and cities like Issoire (25 minutes) or Clermont-Ferrand (55 minutes) to see what you can find.
