Taking yourself away to Auvergne in search of lava domes, lakes and scenic hikes or bike rides? Looks like you’ve hit bullseye with Camping La Clairière, 20 minutes’ drive away from the lava dome of Puy de Dôme and 25 minutes from the city of Clermont-Ferrand, where the cathedral is built from lava rock. Get set for all sorts of activities, like watersports, hiking and cycling… this dog-friendly site is 10 minutes’ walk from the shore of Lac d’Aydat, where sailing and other watersports take place. It’s also in the UNESCO-listed Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, where you can hike and bike through the jagged peaks. The site is also a handy location for all those hiking the GR30 trail, which runs through the local area. There’s a shop five minutes’ drive away from the site if you’re in need of any snacks for the road or, in fact, ingredients for a barbecue back at base. Set in a peaceful spot on the edge of a forest, Camping La Clairière is friendly and family-oriented, with plenty of opportunities to rest, recharge and relax in a natural setting. For eating options, there’s a restaurant at the reception, along with a selection of outdoor seating where you can take a picnic in the shade of a parasol. Other on-site facilities include a play area, a launderette, a line of outdoor washing-up sinks, a shower and toilet block and a chemical disposal area.

Local attractions

Lac d’Aydat (10 minutes’ walk) is a good place to start for activities – this 65-hectare lake has all sorts of watersports including kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing lessons, plus a lake beach, donkey rides, a treetop adventure course and bike trails. All a bit too much? It has plenty of nice cafés and restaurants for a quiet meal or drink instead… Walks by the lake are a good option too, or you could set off to Lac de la Cassière (25 minutes’ walk) or the Cascade de Veyréras waterfalls (40 minutes). For a more challenging walk, make your way to Puy de Dôme (20 minutes’ drive) where you can hike to the top of a huge lava dome (or ride up in the train but tell your friends you walked it…) While you’re in the area, stop in at Vulcania (half an hour), a theme park where you can learn all about volcanoes. Throw a bit of history into the mix too with outings to Château de la Bâtisse (15 minutes) and Château de Busséol (half an hour), or take a walk around Clermont-Ferrand (25 minutes), where the cathedral is made out of lava stone.
