Terrace

  • Peaceful site on the edge of Zaton with its own vineyard
  • A 15-minute drive to Nin; 20 minutes to Zadar
  • Outdoor pool on site, plus restaurant with scenic terrace
A place to stay that’s got its own vineyard on site? For many people, that would be a very good sign – and if you’re one of them then you should certainly consider taking a break at Dionis Camping Zaton. This is more than just an easygoing place to stay, say the owners – it’s also somewhere that guests can really immerse themselves in nature and the local way of life. To help you do both of those things, they’ve planted 10,000 vines just next to the site to create a vineyard that’s a bit of a wildlife haven as well as supplying grapes to go into local wines. Some of those wines can be sampled at the site’s own restaurant, which serves up delicious Dalmatian dinners on its scenic terrace. The accompanying lounge bar is open through the afternoon for lunches, snacks and cool drinks by the open-air pool (a rather fabulous place to while away a few hours…) Trying the wines isn’t the only way to get to know your surroundings – the reception team are on hand to help you find all the best bits of the local area, whether you’d like to experience local traditions, hike through national parks or simply find a nice beach to relax on. The site is on the edge of the village of Zaton, so you’ll be able to make a start on the local way of life by just strolling around there – or you could head to the nearby town of Nin (15 minutes’ drive) for a wander around.

FHU gravel campsite

FHU gravel campsite

Liked: Restaurant and pool were great!

Disliked: There was a lot of noise from other guests during the night and the staff didn’t do anything about it. For instance cars were allowed to burst through the camping pitch at 2 AM to wake everybody up.
Also some huge groups of young people ruined the pool experience by screaming and shouting while playing around in the water.
Facilities are in good condition but the owners installed timers on everything so you had to constantly press a button if you wanted continuous water while taking a bath. Brushing your teeth required somewhat acrobatic skills if you wanted cold water on your toothbrush.
The drainage in the showers were horrible so the entire floor in the entire bathroom area was constantly flooded with water.
The pitches are extremely small so don’t expect any privacy.

FHU gravel campsite

Liked: Lovely welcome, very friendly accommodating staff. Gravel sites fairly level and they have 16amp electricity which is amazing! As it wasn’t full, I was able choose my own place. The pitches are in the middle under a few trees surrounded by chalets but do not feel overlooked or crowded.

Other than the three dislikes, Iand as a solo female traveller, would certainly recommend!

Disliked: The gravel, although a good option was of the big broken stones that one would expect used on construction sites. Quite painful underfoot - even in shoes!

Although the food was excellent and very good value for money, I found the wine prices to be far too expensive with no lower brand options available.

The mosquitoes were a real menace. Had to go into my van by 7pm to get away from them as was bitten quite extensively. Other sites spray under their trees but it doesn’t seem to be the case here.

FHU gravel campsite

Liked: Everything about the site itself.. the staff are so friendly and welcoming.. The toilet and showers are lovely, modern and clean!.. We also ate in the restaurant, the food was so tasty and beautifully cooked.. I had the local fig pannacotta for dessert and I can honestly say it was out of this world!.. 😋 It just wasn't big enough! 🤣 We didn't have time to use the swimming pool but it looked gorgeous, especially when lit up in the early evening..

Disliked: Unlucky for us as it was Saturday night and there was a 'get together' in the bungalows right beside us on site which went on until the early hours!.. 🫤 The rest of the site seemed very quiet.. 😊

Local attractions

If you only make it on one day trip while staying here, it should be to Nin (15 minutes’ drive) – the oldest Croatian royal city. Stop by at the Roman Temple, salt museum and cathedral (said to be the smallest cathedral in the world) before chilling out at one of the town’s sandy beaches (or hiring a bike or boat to explore further if you prefer…) Zadar (20 minutes) is another excellent place to spend the day, wandering around the city walls, looking in at the Museum of Ancient Glass and seeking out places like the Roman Forum and cathedral. For a truly unusual experience, head to the Sea Organ, an artwork that uses tubes stretching into the sea to create natural music. The town is also the place to pick up boat tours to the Kornati Islands National Park, a stunning archipelago of little coves and turquoise waters. Back on the mainland, meanwhile, there are more lovely landscapes to explore in the Paklenica National Park (an hour), which can also be visited on organised excursions (ask on site if you’d like to join one of these).
