  • Dog-friendly site on the river Lesse, near the Forest of Ardennes
  • Rochefort 15 minutes’ drive; Namur 45 minutes
  • Restaurant; pétanque court; wheelchair-friendly access to toilet block
When the doctor recommends a peaceful holiday in a lush green setting (and, of course, you don’t have to wait for doctor’s orders to make your escape…), consider booking a spot at Camping Aux Cailloux, on the outskirts of Han-sur-Lesse (five minutes’ drive, or a 50-minute stroll), in the French-speaking Belgian region of Wallonia. Right on the banks of the river Lesse, this seasonal site is in a prime location to explore the Forest of Ardennes and its many attractions. First among these is the Domain of the Caves of Han, a vast cave network that goes deep into the bowels of the earth – one of its chambers, the vast Weapons Room, sits more than 100 metres underground. But before you lace up your hiking boots, grab the dog leash (four-legged companions are welcome here) and head off exploring the local area, you might want to familiarise yourself with the site, which has grass and gravel pitches with optional electric hook-up (for a daily fee). A toilet block with hot-water showers is available to residents; it’s also worth noting that Camping Aux Cailloux is well suited for guests with mobility issues, since it has step-free access to the bathroom area (which also comes with wide doorways). A pétanque court for family tournaments and a restaurant (plus picnic tables if you would rather eat alfresco) complete the picture. There are more dining options in Han-sur-Lesse and Rochefort (15 minutes).

What customers say

This campsite's renovations show future promise, with a great location and friendly staff. However, guests noted overgrown grass, poor washroom maintenance, missing essentials like soap and toilet paper, and unreliable Wi-Fi. Some reported missing hook-ups and no dishwashing facilities.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked The place was very quiet. Although there was works going on, it did not disrupt our stay. There is very little phone signal, which suited us, but for some could be an issue. The grass was maintained, and surrounding area is lovely.
Goats and cows near by in the next field and a supermarket a few minutes away.

There is a beautiful walk to a river and mountain walk just 5 mins walk from the campsite and 1.30 mins into Luxembourg.

The shower blocks are more self maintained, throughout the day. But you can see they are cleaned in the morning.
There is 2 female toilets and 1 shower which was clean.
Just take toilet roll with you.
Friendly camp site and we will be returning.

Due to some of the reviews, we were almost put off coming, but I’m glad we did now.

Disliked WiFi wasn’t working and no where to wash your dishes

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked Nothing ITS A BUILDING SITE DO NOT USE

Disliked Awful site is being built no facilities, arrived with disabled child electric didn’t work properly only one cabinet had power. Received the same email as everyone else about being the first and they’ve just bought it, site was very soft and grass long, greeted by two builders, no restaurant as described, struggling to get a refund from owner or pitchup electric still had the stripped off cable sheaths like its only just gone in would be wary if it’s even tested as our polarity plug showed live neutral cross which isn’t uncommon in Europe fitted adapter and we had no power at all

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked It has potential in the future

Disliked The smell…. We turned up late and accidentally parked by what looks like an open sewer.
Overgrown grass, it’s undergoing restoration but they could have kept the grass cut.
Couldn’t find anywhere to wash our dishes.
No electric hookups available despite paying for it.
We got an email saying we were the first to stay for a short stay so bare with us, however talking to the others there I think they just send this email to everyone as an excuse.
Toilets were very dirty with no toilet roll.
Expensive, it was one of the most expensive sites out of our entire roadtrip around Europe.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Liked This place is a work in progress, and I'm sure once finished it would be a lovely place, but at the moment, it's not quite there, the new toilet block was nice, warm and the shower worked well, but did lack the basics like soap, and toilet roll, would come equipped for that,

Disliked A bit of a mess
Needs grass cut
Lack of washup area.
Wifi didn't reach pitch9ll

Power optional grass and gravel campsite

Local attractions

A half-hour hike along the forested paths near the site takes you to the Point de Vue du Rocher à Pic (five minutes’ drive), from where you get spectacular views of the woods of the Ellinchamps nature reserve, which is home to wild orchids, woodpeckers and salamanders. On the outskirts of Saint-Hubert (20 minutes) is the Musée de la Vie rurale en Wallonie, an open-air museum with recreated settings typical of life in Wallonia in times gone by. Deer, foxes and wild boar are among the beasties roaming at Parc à Gibier de Saint-Hubert animal park. Climb up to the citadel for great views of Namur (45 minutes), at the confluence of the rivers Meuse and Sambre. This pretty university town has a cobbled centre lined with cafés and shops. The Musée des arts anciens is home to the Treasure of Oignies, a 13th-century collection of intricately decorated silver artefacts.
