A 15-minute walk from the river Buna, which marks the border between Albania and Montenegro, Camping Familja is a family-friendly (it couldn’t be any other way with that name, really…) and well-maintained site in the village of Velipojë, Shkodër County. With marked-out pitches shaded by tall maritime pines, this site sits about 200 metres from sandy Velipoja Beach and the Adriatic Sea – a rather fabulous location for a laidback break. Velipoja Beach has quite the reputation in these parts, as the sand is apparently rich in iodine, which many believe gives it 'curative' properties. Add a wonderfully peaceful vibe on site, a playground for the kids and a restaurant serving local breakfasts, wood-fired pizzas, colourful salads and, of course, locally caught fish and seafood… and you have all the ingredients for a top seaside holiday. (Speaking of fish, the site has its own dedicated angling area, so don’t forget to pack your gear.) Your four-legged friends are welcome guests here (as long as they’re kept on a leash), and they will probably enjoy exploring the surrounding area at your heel – whether the Derdhja e Bunes woodland next door, or the trails on Mali i Nikgjonit mountain (15 minutes’ drive). The pristine toilet block has modern fittings, rainfall showers and washing machines; in addition, the site is secure and fully covered by CCTV. A mini market and ATM next to the site are useful extras to have on hand.

Liked: We liked the Camping which was nice and small. Very green and splendid sanitair. Deelde very welcomed as well. Nice restaurant right next to the Camping. And beach is close by but we liked the lake and river (30 min drive) better.

Local attractions

Sitting on a promontory overlooking the Buna River, Rozafa Castle has wonderful views and a long history going back all the way to the third century BC. It’s one of the highlights of a trip to Shkodër (35 minutes’ drive), a laidback town that's also got a lovely Old Town and some excellent craft shops to explore. Backed by mountains, Shiroka (40 minutes) is the gateway to Shkodra Lake, a vast body of water popular among birdwatchers, who come to catch glimpses of pelicans, cranes and eagles. After sampling the local fish in one of the waterfront restaurants, climb up to derelict King Zog’s Villa for far-reaching views of the lake. The former salt flats at Solana Ulcinj (one hour and 20 minutes), in neighbouring Montenegro, attract migratory birds such as pink flamingos. Nearby is a long stretch of sandy beaches with umbrellas and sun loungers for hire.
