  • Set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth
  • Peaceful setting with direct access to the Ardudwy Way
  • Five-acre site with loads of open space for play
If you’ve been foraging around for a quiet break with heaps of gorgeous scenery, the name Hideaway in the Hills should speak for itself. No prizes for guessing where this friendly, remote site is based… it’s set in a lush valley. More specifically, it’s in the Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth. This is a peaceful park covering five acres, with basic facilities – it’s practically wild camping but with the added convenience of simple toilet and shower facilities, washing-up sinks and a freezer for ice packs. Even better for all of you adventurous types, the site hires out open Canadian canoes free of charge for paddles over the park’s own private lake (or just bring your own inflatable boat to bob about in). Kids will love swinging in the trees at the site – no, not Tarzan-like but on a basket swing – and there’s loads of open space for ball games and general wheeling about as well as scope to burrow into dens among the woodland. That’s on top of the oak woodland just outside of the pitches and the hills (if you’re up for a climb, that is). This is a quiet site, with just the soundtrack of pint-sized guests playing in high season. Outside of the summer holidays, it gets even more peaceful. Picnic benches have been handily provided for each pitch, with firepits and grills available for hire for a small charge and logs and kindling for sale on site too (please don’t bring your own or gather firewood from around the park). If you manage to venture off site, the staff can supply leaflets on the many walking trails round and about; there are ancient oak woodlands within two minutes of the park, and beaches within a few miles.

What customers say

This remote spot earns high marks for its beautiful setting, quiet vibe, and spacious sites with fire pits. Guests loved the lake access, canoeing, and nearby trails. Owners were noted as friendly and helpful, with clean facilities and fair prices frequently praised. Some found the narrow access road tricky, and a few suggested facility upgrades, especially for toilets and showers.

Camping pod

Liked + Great location close to forest, hills and wildlife
+ The road is a bit narrow so you have to give a way and reverse sometimes, but well maintained with reception and clear guidance.
+ Toilet / shower block. Good cleaning/washing sinks with sensor lights
+ WiFi
+ Fire pit /BBQ cooking
+ Some amazing beaches within 10-15 drive
+ Little lake with free canoe rental
+ Kids playground

The pod/site have all basic facilities with great views, lake and access

Disliked I think some minor improvements can be easily made :

1) I agree with the comments that in the men's block there is only one cubical and shower. When the campsite is fully booked this is very tight if you also add kids.
2) The shower is functional but really hot (no way to change pressure/temperature). The wooden door is not the best for the showing area.
3) WiFi is not strong enough for the lower campsite and also there is no O2 reception. Not a big problem you can walk a few steps to the block.
4) There is a sewage smell at the back of the block which is flowing down the field. Not sure what is the problem but on a warm day you can certainly smell it.
5) The pod has all facilities (the bed is a standard double and not very comfortable but it's ok for a campsite) but I do not think it is cleaned at all. (Check out/check in at 12). Bring some microfibre for dusting and antibacterial wipes
6) I was not able to see any markings to mark the area as we found someone literally park the car with windows facing the pods. I think it would help with some marking to understand the boundaries

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Literally a cute Hideaway in the Hills! Good for kids, with the forests and the little lake.

It is isolated, but it is a hideaway...it's part of the charm.

If camping, ask for the Penthouse!

Disliked The facilities to people capacity ratio isn't the greatest.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Hot shower, hot water in sinks. Hand soap and toilet available provided. 2f, 1m and an accessable toilet/shower room. Camp fire pits and picnic benches with all pitches. Lovely open clean space, beautiful lake onsite, loved the twisty windy lanes leading to and from the camp, beats city driving. Loved hearing the woodpecker every morning, and watching the dragonflies, even had a frog near the tent which the kids loved. Rope swing in the trees behind the site caravans. Its a walkers paradise. Electric hookup is available if paid with pitch no issues with power supply. Close to a good selection of sightseeing/tourist attractions such as the slate caverns in Llanfair or the waterfalls

Disliked Long drive to supermarkets/fetch basics not at high prices.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked This honestly was an amazing experience.
From the moment we arrived, to the time we left.
The staff were so kind and friendly, the toilet/shower block was clean, and the pitches were well maintained.
We had an electric pitch by the stream, and honestly couldn't had asked for better.
All campers were kind and followed the site rules regarding noise, leaving you to experience the majestic tranquil sound of nature
Set in a beautiful location, the camp site states its getting back to nature, and that you are, but with them sometimes needed extras.
We loved every second of our stay, sleeping sound.

Disliked There was nothing

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice natural environment, lovely walks, clean toilets, able to have hook up and camp fire which was brilliant. Plenty of space available. WiFi available. Everyone very friendly. Able to use the camp fire on site and BBQ. Also able to use a canoe! Lots to do on site without leaving in my opinion. Highly recommend.

Disliked There was no phone signal at all. Completely off grid but there is WiFi available if you wished so not really a dislike.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location,no dogs, fire pits, swings, slack line in the wood, small lake with free canoe, views, access to hiking trails, short drive to lovely beeches

Disliked The only thing that let the place down a little was the showers, now having said that, they work, there hot, there clean and free so you cant complain, which I'm not,its just this is a honest review, the water pressure is low so the water only comes out slow, but like I said above they do the job, personally I've had worse on other campsites, its just i wanted to mention for others.

There are three ways to reach Dinas; the site recommends that guests use the Llanbedr route. The final stretch is along a single track; you may need to reverse to a passing bay if traffic approaches from the other direction. From Llanbedr, turn off the A496 at the Victoria Inn and follow signs for Cwm Nantcol and Cwm Bychan for 2.5 miles. Ignore the turning for Harlech. When you arrive at the big Dinas Caravan Park and Camping sign, do not follow the bend, but continue straight ahead for another 200 meters to arrive at Dinas.

Local attractions

The area around Hideaway in the Hills is tramping terrain: this section of north Wales is riddled with walks for all abilities including the Wales Coastal Path. This is also the only local site with direct access to the Ardudwy Way, a 23-mile route between Barmouth and Llandecwyn with sea and mountain views. Llandanwg beach is under three miles away; this sheltered part of shore can land anglers mackerel, flatfish and bass and is popular with other watery types for windsurfing and kayaking. And it’s probably the only beach in the world with a 13th-century church hidden among its sand dunes... To the north of the beach on Tremadog Bay seaside town of Harlech with medieval Harlech Castle. The castle is crammed with history and was the site of the longest siege in British history during the Wars of the Roses; be sure and lustily sing ‘Men of Harlech’ as you stomp around. At nearby Barmouth, catch a pedestrian ferry at the quay and join up with the narrow-gauge Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway at Barmouth ferry station for a two-mile trip through top Snowdonia scenery.
