  • Small family-friendly caravan site with Irish Sea views in Gwynedd
  • Trefor Beach five minutes’ drive; Inigo Jones Slate Works 15 minutes
  • Barbecues and dogs welcome; pub and shops five minutes’ drive
When you’re looking for a convenient base in Gwynedd to overnight or bed down for a week or so, Penlon Caravan and Camping has got you covered. With a handy location just off the main Caernarfon to Pwllheli Road (A499), this dog-friendly park is set on a farm within easy reach of the coast as well as walking in the Rivals Hills (Yr Eifl), golf courses and museums. The level grass pitches all have a bird’s-eye view of the Irish Sea, with the nearest (sand and pebble) beach being at Trefor (five minutes’ drive), a small village where you can also pick up basics from the shop or post office. There’s a pub (with pool and darts for any rainy days) there too, with magical views over Yr Eifl from the beer garden. Back on the caravan site, useful family facilities include a utility room with a sink, washing machine and dryer so you can keep everything shipshape. There are also a couple of spacious and spotless shower rooms, one with amenities for disabled guests. Barbecues are also welcome on site as long as you take care not to damage the grass.

Liked: Location was great for what we wanted to do & the site was very tidy. Bathrooms & utility area were clean

Disliked: It wasn’t a problem this time as the site was not busy but there are only 3 unisex bathrooms, 2 with showers - can imagine it gets quite busy at peak holiday time . I’m not a fan of unisex bathrooms but that’s maybe just me!

As we are a small site, and mostly get touring caravans, and they have their own toilets & showers.

Liked: Great location and super clean facilities. Handy for the village of Trefor which has a shop a pub and a post office as well as a lovely large harbour. Easy to join the Wales coastal path and looked to be well served by buses as well. The owner obviously runs a tight ship - nothing wrong with that if it's peace and quiet and super clean facilities that you want.

Disliked: We parked at the top end and there was bit of traffic noise but nothing too bad.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The views were amazing, the lady at the office was really friendly and helpful. The facilities were useful and everyone on the site was respectful and friendly.

Disliked: I would say if you’re in a tent, avoid any low areas of the land as the rain clogged some of the grass. Also the road is quite busy into the night but these things are obviously no ones fault and we didn’t mind the road noise but if its something that bothers you keep it in mind.

Liked: The site owner Mary was very friendly. The site is very nice: small with gentle slopes. The facilities are basic but very clean. That is all I want from a camping, caravaning site.

Disliked: As others said, there is a little road noise in the early evening. The site entrance could do with a larger sign.

Liked: Great little site close to Trefor. Quiet and minimal which is my kind of place. Facilities clean and tidy. Mary is lovely. Perfect spot from which to explore Lyn peninsula.

Disliked: Not a big deal but close to road so a little bit of car noise but nothing to worry about.

Liked: Easy access, quiet site with EHU, toilets, showers and utility room containing wash up area, kettle, washing machine and dryer.
Well positioned for access to Trefor and Welsh mountains.

The site is a 1.6 mile walk to the pebble beach at Trefor. Mainly country road (no path and 60 mph speed limit) but not very busy. There is a woodland area about 0.25 miles down the road from the site - ideal for dog walking although it had rained heavily in the days before our visit.
