  • Adults-only site on Llŷn Peninsula, 15 minutes’ drive from Pwllheli
  • Direct walks to Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch; Caernarfon 20 minutes' drive
  • Spacious, secluded pitches; footpath to the beach; wildlife
On the northern shore of Gwynedd’s Llŷn Peninsula Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Gyrn Ddu Campsite is named after one of the two mountains that provide a backdrop to its lushly green setting (the other peak being Gyrn Goch). Nearby mountains can only mean one thing: epic walks await. And make no mistake: there are plenty of trails to explore in this area. Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch are both accessible on foot from this adults-only site, and the car park for Yr Eifl is a 10-minute drive away. The site also has direct access via a footpath to a peaceful pebbly beach that seems to be made for long, relaxing walks with your significant other – or for a spot of paddleboarding (you will need your own equipment). When you first arrive at the site, leave your car in the designated parking area and grab a wheelbarrow to ferry your belongings to your spacious pitch, which feels gloriously private and secluded; each is accessed via a little path cutting through the long grass. This is wild camping (or maybe it’s more accurate to say it is low-impact camping), with more than a few convenient facilities: from toilets and showers, to a washing-up area and water points. Spectacular views and the likelihood of spotting assorted wildlife (buzzards and other birds of prey, plus ducks and rabbits) complete the picture. Barbecues and campfires are allowed, and the nearest store is in Trefor (five minutes); the site is also handy for the A499, which takes you to Pwllheli and the south coast of the peninsula in about 15 minutes. Bus stops are near the site's entrance for bus route 12 between Pwllheli and Caernarfon.

What customers say

This campsite has private spots in a beautiful, quiet setting with amazing mountain and ocean views. Showers and washrooms are always clean and well-kept, with hot water. Guests like the private pitches, fire pits, benches, and easy firewood buying. Most reviews are great, but some mention slight road noise and a wish for shower benches. Visitors highly recommend it for its peaceful vibe, natural beauty, and great coastal access.

Primitive grass tent campsite (sea view)

Liked Stunning setting and private pitches, with little-to-no sight of other camps. The hosts are informative, helpful and responsive - providing all the information or instructions we might have needed. We were two substantial tents plus awning/tarp and we fit perfectly on the pitch.

The facilities (showers and toilets) were good and always clean; and although there's only two showers I waited no more than 5 minutes at any point on a busy bank holiday weekend. There's one washing up station, but again, I didn't wait for any more than 5 minutes and it was mostly free.

There are thoughtful touches of wheelbarrows for transporting from car to camp (top tier), wood for sale and a picnic bench on pitch.

There's wild rabbits and wildlife, sea and mountain views, and a 10 minute gorgeous stroll to the beach.

Be aware there is noise from the road nearby, but it is by no means disruptive and fades into the background; we also experienced some gusty winds where you're so close to the stunning mountains, but nothing tents couldn't handle.

Overall, this is a beautiful site with all the nature and "small" vibes you could ask for. I'd recommend it, and would stay again.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite (sea view)

Liked This camp site was excellent - we were pitch 15 at the top of the camp where we had our car next to the tent.

We were warmly welcomed by the owners straight away who were super clear with how it all works, where things are and able to make suggestions.

We had a slightly windy first night but expected at a beach view campsite, and then 25 degrees sunny for the rest - amazing place to have this weather.

Short walk down to the beach though steep inclines would be difficult for those with mobility issues.

Showers, toilets and washing up area all beyond suitable! Fire pits and logs at the ready too!

We loved it here - would come back in a heartbeat!

Liked We had a lovely stay. I booked to come here with my mum and my partner and it was the first time we’ve been away together with my mum. The area is beautiful, the caravan was lovely and clean and had everything we needed. Helena was a lovely host and was very attentive.

Disliked One minor thing the shelves in the fridge need fixing

Local attractions

Exhibits at the Airworld Aviation Museum (15 minutes’ drive) span several decades, with a de Havilland Vampire from the 1940s and several post-World War II fighter aircraft. There’s also a replica of the plane with which Blériot first crossed the English Channel in 1909. Sitting on the River Seiont, the medieval castle at Caernarfon (20 minutes) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, alongside several other Welsh fortresses built by Edward I. For the best views, head across the river to the Aber Foreshore, a popular cycling route. Also in town is Caer Rufeinig Segontium, the remains of an ancient Roman fort. Mountains, valleys, marshes and forests are among the diverse and stunning landscapes at Eryri National Park (Snowdonia; 35 minutes). This is also a top spot for stargazing; or (if your interests are of the adrenalin-fuelled kind), head to Zip World Llechwedd, where you can launch across an old quarry.
