  • Set in rural Wales with spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons
  • A 15-minute drive from outdoor activity centres in Brecon
  • Free entry to a farm park for the duration of the stay; café on site
Farmyard fun is the firm order of the day at Cantref Campsite, a family-friendly place three miles from Brecon town centre and surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Stay here and you’ll not just get to meet the friendly animals: guests are permitted to access the kids' farm park next-door for the duration of their stay, from their arrival day to departure day. At the farm park, shows and workshops run every half-hour throughout the day, with antics including pet handling, bottle feeding lambs, tractor and trailer rides and madcap pig races. Now, it does occasionally rain in Wales, so the clever farm folk have installed a pleasingly spacious and heated indoor play area at the farm park in case the outdoor rides are too damp. Got a particular soft spot for the horses? You’re in the right place – the site’s also got a horse riding and pony trekking centre, catering for all abilities from baffled beginner to experienced horse handlers. For eats, Cantref Campsite's farmhouse café serves light lunchtime snacks, cakes and homemade specials and there are a couple of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

Liked: Really spacious tent pitch (no 17).
The staff were super friendly and helpful.
Having free admission to the farm park with your booking it's a massive bonus it was great for our children aged 7 & 3. We also took a dog which we were able to take in aswel.
There is a river 5 mins walk from the campsite which you can walk along and is stunning.

Liked: My 4th visit to this site and it has to be my favourite. I always stay on the Black Mountain pitches which are level, spacious and beautiful view of Pen Y Fan in one direction and hills, fields and livestock in other directions. The toilet / shower block is a bit of a walk up a small hill ( not lit on evening so need torch at night) but always clean. There are only 2 toilets/ showers but it's never been an issue for me. There are additional toilets/showers which are opened in busy periods. 2 outdoor washing up sink ( only 1 draining board). Family shower/ toilet .There are wardens on site which is reassuring. The reception staff, especially Deb , are very friendly and helpful. As a loan female which walks daily, Deb ty took the details of my walk etc .. and checked to make sure I was safely back at my tent! Site situated perfectly to do some challenging walks eg Pen Y Fan Horseshoe.
Lovely short walks from campsite, one is a long a small river.
Brecon is about a 15 min drive and has a great fish and chips shop.
Dog friendly.
Free use of the Adventure Park which was great when my family joined me on one of my stays.
I absolutely love this site and will definitely be staying again next year

Disliked: Outdoor washing up space is limited.
The showers were only ' warm' when looking forward to a lovely ' hot' shower after a hard day walking
The light went off mid shower and had to get out and wave my arms around to trigger it to come back on

2. Friendly, happy staff
3. Clean toilets and showers
4. Good pitch sizes.
5. Amazing scenery
6. Near the 4 waterfall walk

Kids say playing on the tractor and the big slide and feeding the lambs.

Disliked: Lights in the shower/toilet block to be timed to the showers as the lights turn off mid shower.

Liked: Nicely laid out campsite with lovely views, large camping pitches, free admission into the farm which is great if you have kids.

Disliked: The shower block isn’t big enough for the size of the campsite and as a consequence the water is cold unless you get up early. Friendly staff and very helpful. But it wouldn’t put me off staying again .

Local attractions

Views out over the surrounding mountains and valleys will no doubt tip you off that there are plenty of options for mountain biking and hill walking nearby. Several biking and hiking routes start near the site, with heaps more around the rest of the Brecon Beacons National Park (including five mountain bike centres and 14 trails ranging from beginner to expert). If you’re up for other outdoorsy activities, activity centres in Brecon (15 minutes’ drive) can hook you up with days of canoeing, caving, climbing and sailing. For a real challenge, get set to scale Pen y Fan – south Wales’s highest peak is 20 minutes away (handily, the easiest route up is also the most convenient here – no need to let on to the folk back home.) For something a little gentler, take your binoculars to Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad or Talybont Reservoir (both about 20 minutes) for some excellent birdwatching, or crack on to Crickhowell Castle (25 minutes).
