Stop overnight if you're passing through dumfries
Shepherd's huts with stable doors

  • Adults-only countryside site 10 minutes’ drive from Dumfries
  • Biker’s paradise: national cycle route and mountain bike trails nearby
  • Top spot for rambling and coastal excursions
Grab your helmet, strap your bike to the car and hit the road – you’re biking to Corriehall Stopover, an adults-only site five minutes’ drive from the village of Lochfoot and 10 minutes from the market town of Dumfries in the Scottish border region of Dumfries and Galloway. Corriehall is a prime base for exploring the area around Dumfries, and there are few better ways to do so than from the saddle: climb aboard your bike and head off on National Cycle Route 7 (from Sunderland to Inverness) which passes directly by the site, or make your way to 7stanes, about 15 minutes away, for some more rugged mountain biking. If these options require a little too much exertion for you, you can also take a more sedate stroll around the countryside or clamber into the car for a jaunt to the coast. Opting for a day away from the pedals? There’s secure cycle storage on site for your two-wheeled friend, so you needn’t fret while you’re separated. Spending your days zipping around is bound to leave you hungry, so make tracks to the small kitchen on site to get cooking (you can nab some ingredients on site and everything else in one of the supermarkets in Dumfries) or grab a table at one of the restaurants within 15 minutes of Corriehall to treat yourself.

Liked: We used the side as a stop over on our way to Portpatrick.
Basic no toilet or shower facilities but we didn't need them.
Drinking water, grey waste & chemical disposal. Not far of the main road. Idea

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Nothing not to like, Corriehall Stopover is a great place to stay, we were in our motorhome, so didn't stay in the shepherds huts, but they look really lovely and cosy.
Roman and Maxine are fantastic hosts and can't do enough for you.
They have some beautiful animals and watching the horses in the field directly from the van was wonderful.
It's nice and close to Dumfries but far enough away to be away from it all with the bus stopping right outside the gate! Adults only at this site is a bonus for us too.
I definitely recommend it 😁

Bluebell shepherd's hut (two person)

Liked: This is the second time we have stayed here and again it didn't disappoint. Lovely wee huts with all you could think of for a comfortable and convenient stay. Listening to the birdsong and farm animals was just so peaceful.

Local attractions

There’s oodles to do in the Scottish border area, but you might find yourself not wanting to go much further than Dumfries. The pretty town is chock-full of fab sights you’ll want to add to the list: fish in the river Nith, poke around Dumfries Museum (and Camera Obscura Observatory), learn about Scotland’s national poet at Robert Burns House, refuse to grow up at JM Barrie’s childhood home (Moat Brae), and marvel at the stunning ruins of Lincluden and Sweetheart abbeys. If you decide to venture beyond Dumfries, there’s plenty to welcome you. When you think of Scotland, you probs think of castles, and you won’t be disappointed at Corriehall: Caerlaverock, Orchardton Tower, Drumcoltran Tower and Threave Castle are all within half an hour of the site, and Carlisle and Drumburgh castles are over the border in Cumbria. In need of a quickie ‘runaway’ wedding? You’re in luck – Corriehall is 45 minutes from Gretna Green, a small border village synonymous with 18th-century elopement, when strict marriage laws in England sent countless young couples scurrying to Scotland to tie the knot. They need a little more notice now, but other than that you're good to go. If all that’s not enough for you, or if you’re craving a more urban experience, the shops, museums, galleries and restaurants of Glasgow and Edinburgh are around two hours from Corriehall.
