  • Adults-only shepherd’s hut on a farm 15 minutes’ walk from Maybole
  • Ayr 20 minutes’ drive; Glasgow one hour
  • Kitchenette and ensuite shower room; outside area and barbecue hut
Looking for a blissfully peaceful and very private Scottish retreat? No children to disrupt your afternoon nap? No dogs barking you awake at ungodly o’ clock? Then make your way to The Wee Shepherds Hut, on a family farm about half a mile outside the Ayrshire town of Maybole (15 minutes’ walk). This custom-made adults-only shepherd’s hut might identify as ‘wee’, but it is also rather handsomely kitted out, with a plush, comfortable bed (and all bedding provided), a kitchenette with microwave, toaster and kettle, and an ensuite shower room. Not forgetting splendid views of the surrounding hills and fields with grazing donkeys, sheep and other farm animals. The shingly outside area comprises two Adirondack chairs and (for those who want to snuggle up close to each other) a comfortable swing. There’s also a barbecue hut that guests can use if they are determined to eat alfresco regardless of the weather… Maybole town has a handful of small supermarkets and takeaway spots, plus a traditional pub serving burgers, curries and Sunday roasts. The local area has both gentle walking paths and more challenging hikes, such as the one leading to the top of Brown Carrick Hill (15 minutes’ drive), from where there are far-reaching views of the coastline. The sandy Maybole Shore (10 minutes) is a great spot to watch the sunset and to admire faraway views of the Isle of Arran.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Ayr (20 minutes’ drive) is Burns’ Cottage, where Scotland’s national poet was born in 1759. Now a museum, it displays original manuscripts and portraits, as well as more unusual items, such as a cast of Burns’ skull. National Cycle Route 7 skirts Ayr’s sandy beach, as does the Land Scots Mile walk. Ardrossan (40 minutes) has a sheltered sandy beach and the ruins of a 13th-century castle that is said to be haunted by the ghost of Scottish hero William Wallace. From Ardrossan it’s possible to sail across the Firth of Clyde and reach the Isle of Arran in about 55 minutes. Spend a day admiring spectacular art in Glasgow (one hour), where the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is home to an elegant panel by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the striking ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’ by Salvador Dalí. For a deeper dive into Mackintosh and the Glasgow Style, head to the Mackintosh House, which holds the reconstructed interior of the artist’s former Glasgow home.
