  • Dog-friendly site a five-minute drive from Blackwaterfoot Beach
  • Arran Alpacas five minutes’ drive; Brodick Castle 20 minutes
  • Playground; local produce; five minutes’ drive from a golf course
On the west of the Isle of Arran, surrounded by the splendid Ayrshire countryside, Bridgend Campsite is a peaceful dog-friendly spot. Visitors come here to explore the island’s spectacular coastline (the Arran Coastal Way passes nearby), climb its peaks or delve into its ancient history (the Machrie Moor Standing Stones are a five-minute drive from the site). During your stay here, you might like to improve your swing in one of the numerous golf courses with dramatic views of the sea. The nearest one, Shiskine (five minutes), also has tennis courts and bowling greens. Or you might choose to do very little, except perhaps indulge in a spot of wild swimming (or wildlife spotting) in Drumadoon Bay, at sandy Blackwaterfoot Beach (five minutes’ drive). And soaking up the spectacular sunsets, of course. Families are welcome here, and a playground with swings and a miniature adventure course ought to keep the kids busy while you prepare a meal featuring local products such as cheeses and chutneys, which you can source from the on-site food shop alongside basic food items such as pasta and soups. For anything else you might need, the nearest shop is in Blackwaterfoot (five minutes), and there are also supermarkets in Brodick (15 minutes), on the east coast. Brodick and Lamlash (20 minutes) also have a decent range of restaurants. In addition to a toilet/shower block and a washing-up area, the site has a communal fridge freezer, ice-pack freezing, charging facilities and recycling points.

Local attractions

Fancy exploring Arran’s countryside with a new four-legged friend? It’s possible when you visit Arran Alpacas (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk). Animal experiences here are tailored to different age groups, so kids under 12 can feed the alpacas (and the sheep and ducks) and go on a short walk, while adults get a full one-hour trek. Among desolate moorland, the Machrie Moor Standing Stones (five minutes) are a series of six stone circles dating from the Neolithic and Bronze ages (about 2000 BC). They may have been the setting for the burials of prominent tribal figures and other ceremonial events, just like the nearby Auchagallon Stone Circle Cairn (10 minutes). If you’ve been watching ‘The Traitors’ and are longing to visit a Scottish castle, head to Brodick Castle, Garden and Country Park (20 minutes). Overlooking the Firth of Clyde, this centuries-old estate has elegant interiors (check out the mounted stags’ heads on the walls), formal gardens and expansive woodland.
