Are you Waterford bound? Take a look at Crotty’s Lake Camping – a handsome and rural spot indeed, and one that will surely act as an excellent base for exploring Copper Coast beaches, cycling through the countryside and hiking green slopes overlooking lakes.   Secure, private and with dog-friendly pitches backed by woodland, Crotty’s Lake Camping has direct access to Crotty’s Lake (no swimming permitted), a spectacular lake surrounded by tall hills. The owner is on hand to greet you and answer any questions you may have, or give advice on local things to do. Facilities on site are well maintained – the communal area includes a toilet, a ‘wild’ (off-grid) shower, washing-up sink and cooking facilities. There’s a coffee stop and honesty shop for snacks, and picnic tables dotted about the place so you can soak up the peace as you eat. The nearest shop is 10 minutes’ drive away in Carrowleigh if you need to source ingredients for your meals, and if you’d rather get someone else to do the cooking for you, there are pubs and restaurants in riverside Carrick-on-Suir (15 minutes), a pretty market town with a castle and theatre.

Primitive grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked Great rural site. On the base of the hill, between pinetrees and wildlife. We had lots of spots to choose from, but because of the weight and size of the campervan we decided to not go up behind the hut. We were welcomed very warmly and got instructions to how to walk up to the lake best. We had a great, very peaceful stay and we can recommend this for everyone who loves staying in pure nature.

Primitive grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked The wildness of the site.
That it can hardly be called a 'site'...more a mountainside pitch with basic facilities should you want them down the hill.
The walk to the lake.
The people, both staff and campers.
The whole experience - just go there :)

Disliked Zilch (though see below, the loo and kitchen area could do with a good clean... even if you're living in the wilds clean facilities feel good!)

Primitive grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked A fantastic and very affordable campsite. Excellent location, beautiful views, and clean air. We loved Crotty Lake, which is also steeped in history. Bernard, Joe, and their family were very friendly and welcoming. There were cooking facilities and a place to get coffee and tea. The bathrooms were clean, and I was surprised to find feminine hygiene products; not even the most expensive 5-star hotels in the world have them. Campfires are not allowed; I agree this is for safety and to protect nature and the environment. But the use of smokeless fuels, such as campfires, is permitted. We had a great time and will definitely return. I would recommend it to my friends. Thanks for everything, Bernard.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite (no pets)

Liked Very unique campsite, lots of different beautiful and varied spaces to suit your needs. Ideal for hiking the Comeraghs but the awesome hospitality stood out. Lots of tips for the locality, and a fire pit with smokeless fuel (purchased on site). We had a lovely relaxed two nights camping.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite (no pets)

Liked The place.

Disliked Who the hell had the idea of running a campsite and do not allow fires?? Camping with no fire?? That’s not camping. It’s a very nice place, but I wouldn’t go back again. Sorry, I understand their rules but don’t agree with them. If you really lime camping, enjoying a night camping, that’s not the place. Nice people running it, but sorry, no. When asked what was the reason for not allowing fires we had 3 different ones. So, it is unclear why, it seems just they don’t want.

From the manager: Dear Antonino,

We here at Crotty's Lake are disappointed you did not have the experience you hoped for at our place. Your co camper also expressed a similar view.

You state in your review that we do not allow small campfires, this is simply not the case. I am sure you noted our rules stating very clearly that smokeless fuels are allowed, before you booked. Perhaps you missed it, but then it was explained to you on the day several times that smokeless fuel was available but you choose the option not to use it. This was your choice of course and we respect that entirely.

Your point about the three different reasons for our campfire policy were also outlined to you very explicitly and easy to comprehend.

Thank you for your kind comments about the management and the place being nice. I hope on reflection that you understand our rules were in place before you booked and that safety and the environment are uppermost in our minds and everyone else's at all times.

Local attractions

The rural area surrounding Crotty’s Lake Camping certainly has an impressive line-up of attractions. You can get active hiking around Coumshingaun Lough (five minutes’ drive), or have a shot at the Waterford Greenway (15 minutes), a 46-kilometre cycling trail on a former railway line between Waterford and Mallow. You can stroll over the soaring spans of 19th-century Kilmacthomas Viaduct (15 minutes), which once carried trains and now forms part of the greenway. Other splendid sights along the route include Mount Congreve Gardens and Country Estate (25 minutes), with colourful formal gardens and rare trees planted 200 years ago. The Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark (25 minutes) is a stretch of coastline dotted with 19th-century copper mines. Several Copper Coast beaches are within half an hour’s drive of the site, including Bunmahon and the sheltered waters of Kilmurrin Cove. Tramore (40 minutes) is a handsome seaside town backing a popular sandy expanse; the geopark stretches from there west to lively Dungarvan (25 minutes) with its shops, pubs and restaurants.
