Drive to the site

  • CAMC members-only site with a peaceful location in the Mendip Hills
  • Strawberry Line access from the site; Cheddar Gorge 15 minutes’ drive
  • Shops and takeaways 10 minutes’ drive; gourmet pub 25 minutes’ walk
Reserved for members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, Uplands Caravan Club Certified Location has a peaceful setting in Somerset’s Mendip Hills National Landscape. The 1.5-acre grass site is sheltered by mature hedges and surrounded by gorgeous, unspoilt countryside. This little haven is approached by a long tree-lined drive through 36 acres of landscaped grounds. Woodland forms the backdrop and shelters a myriad of wildlife, from buzzards and woodpeckers to roe deer. Each pitch on the site comes with an electric hook-up, good satellite television and phone signals, and use of shared facilities including showers, toilets, a heated outdoor swimming pool (seasonal), and a games room with a pool table, darts board, table-tennis table and TV. Uplands is 10 minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Winscombe, with numerous shops including a butcher, bakery and convenience store. If you’re taking time away from the kitchen on your holiday, you can breathe a sigh of relief as there are also Chinese and Indian takeaways as well as a fish and chip shop. For special treats, The Railway Inn at Sandford (25 minutes’ walk) is something of a destination pub.

Liked: .

Disliked: Washroom wash too remote from the touring field, no lighting to walk to the washrooms after dark and they were situated down a dark pathway through bushes and trees, tucked away behind the swimming pool.
There was a sign saying new washroom & toilets coming soon but it appeared to be a dumping ground for an old truck and building rubble.
The whole site looked slightly neglected, definitely needs some tlc.

Local attractions

The popular Strawberry Line walking and cycling path between Cheddar and Weston-super-Mare runs past the site, so you have family-friendly activities almost literally on your doorstep. If that’s a bit too tame, a half-hour walk through woodland surrounding the camping field takes you to Mendip Activity Centre, where you can try your hand at skiing and snowboarding, tobogganing and archery. Home of the well-known cheese, Cheddar (15 minutes’ drive) lies at the foot of its spectacular namesake gorge, with opportunities for high-octane pastimes like climbing and canyoning. Alternatively, treat the kids to subterranean tours of limestone formations in Cox’s Cave. Clifton Suspension Bridge, hot-air balloons and the lively arts and dining scene around the Wapping Wharf are just some of the attractions of Bristol (40 minutes), while the Georgian city of Bath (55 minutes) is world-known for its ancient Roman baths, medieval abbey and ultra-modern Thermae Bath Spa. Glastonbury (40 minutes) is more than just an annual international music festival, with its myriad of boho shops selling incense, Tarot cards and worry beads.
