  • Small, level touring park in Banwell at the foot of the Mendip Hills
  • Two miles from the M5 and five from Weston-Super-Mare
  • Plenty of open space and spectacular views
As the owners of Myrtle Farm Holidays rightly point out, its setting at the foot of Somerset's Mendip Hills means there's something here for all sorts. Weston-super-Mare is only five miles away, hilly hikes are on the doorstep, and within a quick drive you'll be at famed Somerset and Wiltshire spots like Cheddar Gorge, Bristol and Bath, Stonehenge, Longleat and anciently idiosyncratic Glastonbury. Its semi-rural location a mile from the village of Banwell has it easily accessible too: Junction 21 of the M5 and Worle train station are both two miles away and Bristol airport within 11 miles. Under new ownership since 2016, Myrtle Farm is a family-run, small and level touring park, welcoming families and adults, and facing south with excellent views. It's well maintained and spacious with plenty of room for kids to run around. Amenities were updated in 2019 and include a rebuilt shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and disabled facilities, and a new kitchen with a washing machine and tumble dryer, all spotlessly kept and supplied with soap, shower gel and shampoo. A wifi hotspot can be accessed by the amenities. Village pubs, shops, restaurants, takeaways, a post office and a castle (cream teas in the summer, anyone?) are all a mile away at the farm's local village of Banwell.

Field 1 powered grass campsite (XL)

Liked: Well maintained and clean.

Disliked: We were under the impression the site was family friendly and had to pay extra for our children to come along - however there were no additional amenities for children to account for additional costs. The site was advertised to have wifi included - it did indeed have wifi but the owner proudly announced that the wifi only covers a small circle surrounding a picnic bench near the entrance of the site - hardly suitable for a campsite with 25+ pitches, especially in wet April weather. Our pitch was one of the furthest from here, therefore we had no access to wifi at our designated pitch. We also had to pay an additional fee to erect our awning, upon arrival we quickly noticed that all pitches were string lined and every pitch had the same space so I cannot understand why we would need to pay extra when others have that space included free without an awning… We were pitched next to a couple who continuously smoked marijuana in the morning, noon and night. As I said above, the site is well maintained and clean but what I didn’t expect was for the pitches grass to be cut every time it became free - the lawnmower was cutting several times daily. There are no immediate amenities, the roads outside the campsite are dangerous for miles on foot especially if you have children, however WSM is very close driving distance, you can also continue to Brean and Burnham on Sea. I do try to enjoy what is available on site but the longer we were here the more tedious it became. For the price of this site, which is twice or more as expensive than many of those with better amenities in better locations, we personally did not find this site to be good value for money. There are a lot of unnecessary additional costs which most other sites include as standard.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review us...I have taken your feedback onboard and am very sorry we didn't meet your expectations.

Myrtle Farm Holidays accepts couples & families alike, we have several different size pitches which are priced accordingly to include upto 2 people; additional adults and children, cars, awnings, gazebos, pup tents, dogs are at an additional charge and this is detailed with cost on booking, we do not advertise as having facilities for the children accept 2 huge fields for them to play in, nor that there is loads to do onsite or in walking distance.
The site is advertised as having a wi-fi hotspot which is pointed out on arrival, none of the pitches have wi-fi, phone signal 3G, 4G & 5G is very good on most networks.
We pride ourselves on keeping all aspects of the site neat and tidy, there is grass to cut most days as we like to provide pitches neat & tidy for everyone and grass is growing very quickly this time of year.
Myrtle Farm Holidays is semi rural and I agree there isn't anything in easy walking distance as the lanes to the village are narrow with no pavements, however taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap.

As for the couple smoking marijuana... had this been reported to me it would have been dealt with swiftly, we have zero tolerance regarding any form of drugs being taken or even brought onto site. I do encourage customers to engage with me if they have any problems and I will deal with them discreetly....I am upset that this wasn't brought to my attention and me be given the chance to rectify.

Great site, lovely owners and highly recommended.

Disliked: Bit of road noise as very close to main road and could hear the drone of the M5 in the distance but this wasn't an issue.

Local attractions

The Myrtle Farm Holidays setting at the foot of the Mendip Hills has it perfectly placed for outdoorsy days, with a vast pick of walks, cycle routes, fishing and birdwatching within easy distance. By car, Cheddar village and the famed and fab Cheddar Gorge are very close by, as is the teeny city of Wells with its cathedral and independent shops. The National Trust-managed Victorian Gothic house of Tyntesfield is ten miles away. Another cracking option is Glastonbury, with its independent shops and cafés, museums, Glastonbury Abbey and Glastonbury Tor. The golden sandy beaches, seaside shops and wide range of restaurants and bars at Weston-Super-Mare, Brean and Burnham-on-Sea are all within a short drive. You'll also be within easy driving distance of the cities of Bristol and Bath and their shopping, theatres, cinemas, museums, bars and restaurants. Travel a little further to get to Wiltshire, where must-sees include Stonehenge and Longleat.
