  • Adults-only glampsite five minutes’ drive from Cheddar in Somerset
  • Wells and Wookey Hole Caves 15 minutes’ drive; Glastonbury 25 minutes
  • Bell tents with Somerset Levels views; communal barn with kitchen
Five minutes’ drive from Cheddar on the southern slopes of Somerset’s Mendip Hills National Landscape, Paddocks Glamping is an adults-only site on a former strawberry farm with spectacular views over the Somerset Levels. There are just a handful of peaceful pitches, making it popular with couples looking for romantic breaks in rural surroundings. Alternatively, you have the option to get together with small groups of friends and hire the entire site. Accommodation is in well-designed bell tents in which you can enjoy home comforts such as a double bed, stylish furnishings and homely touches like bedside lamps, basic crockery and cutlery. Outside is private decking, a picnic table, gas barbecue and firepit, and you have lots of handy utilities such as mains power and potable running water. There’s a modern toilet block and shower room with a heated floor only steps from the tents, plus a communal barn with a woodburning stove, kitchen essentials like a microwave and fridge, washing-up facilities, table, chairs and a sofa for lazy afternoons with a good book. You can also do more relaxing – or possibly wildlife spotting, as green woodpeckers and deer are frequent visitors – down by the large natural pond.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to see more of the gorgeous Mendip Hills National Landscape, take the short hike up to Draycott Sleights (half an hour’s stroll) from the pitches for views right to the Bristol Channel on clear days. There are longer hikes to be had on the West Mendip Way: 15 minutes’ walk to the north takes you to Cheddar, where you can sample its namesake cheese, explore the gorge, go caving or rock climbing. Further afield, historic Wells (15 minutes’ drive) has a statue-and-gargoyle encrusted cathedral and medieval Bishop’s Palace and Gardens to discover. The streets of centuries-old Glastonbury (25 minutes) are lined with New Age shops, and it’s also home to the delightful Somerset Rural Life Museum, partly set in a stunning 13th-century timber-vaulted barn. For a subterranean adventure, head for Wookey Hole (15 minutes), where you can explore the network of caves studded with dramatic limestone formations. Wind up your day with a visit to The Cider Barn (10 minutes’ amble from your pitch) for a couple of pints of Somerset cider, pizzas and live music.
