  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops
If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

Powered cement/asphalt campsite

Liked First time on this site. We chose because of previous reviews and videos from other guests. A big reason was because of transport - trains and buses near to site entrance as we have a Motorhome. It’s important for us. Swanage, Weymouth, Poole, Dorchester, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Dor were easily reachable and we took advantage. Site staff were instantly welcoming and very friendly throughout our stay. The facilities were spotlessly clean and well thought out. This site ticked all the boxes for us, I’m sure others will feel the same.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Powered cement/asphalt campsite

Liked This is a fabulous campsite which is ideally located near the bus and train station. It caters for families well and is nice and quiet and promotes being respectful of others.

We arrived on site where we were greeted and helped to put our caravan in its place. The man then offered some useful information about the best way to navigate the local attractions, which we found invaluable.

The site is split into three fields with a small shop, games room and toilet and shower blocks in the main field. The showers and toilets were always clean and never busy despite plenty of visitors on site. There is a pub across the road which offers discount to anyone staying at the campsite. Nearby is a lovely walk along the river which is ideal for dogs as its not too strong in current.

I would definitely recommend this site and will be visiting again thanks to the friendly staff. The only thing we found a bit of a challenge is the Wifi which wasn't good enough for us to watch TV so we needed to tether off our phones. Otherwise fantastic site!

We're sorry that our Wifi proved a bit of a struggle for you. Unfortunately, we are limited in the Wifi options we can offer our guests due to limitation in available services to our site. We're glad to hear that you managed in the end though. (If all else fails, we always have plenty of DVDs in our reception area that our guests are welcome to borrow free of charge during their stay.) :)

Liked Good flat pitches. Friendly staff. The toilet and shower facilities were modern, plenty of them and always clean. Pub five minutes walk away did good food and was also very welcoming.

Disliked If you are in the third field, as we were, it is a little bit of a trek to the facilities (175 steps).

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Speaking as someone who is more of a hotel kinda gal, I would definitely return here. The staff were fantastic, the chap that came to greet us and show us where our pitch was was so helpful and friendly. The site was so clean and well run. The shower and toilet facilities were fantastic, they were warm and the 24/7 radio was a fantastic touch so you aren’t in silence should you need a midnight wee. The showers were in cubicles that had a separate area in where you could change and hang your clothes in the dry, this was brilliant.
The pitches were such a great size, very level, and the local area wasn’t bad with a great pub 2 minutes walk away.

Disliked Nothing that was the fault of the campsite.. some people just dont have it in them to be considerate of others, so it was very noisy after the 10oclock quiet time rule and when they eventually left the site at 10:30, they just went to the pub which was almost next to our pitch.
Again, no fault of the campsite but I’d probably ask for a different pitch next time.

Even though you're right in saying that some people are just inconsiderate, we are sorry that you had to experience this on our campsite. We try our best to ensure all our guests abide by our 10pm quite time rule and urge everyone to report any disturbances after this time. Please don't ever feel that you have to endure noise disturbances whilst on site.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
