  • Riverside campsite on a Devon farm, 25 minutes' drive from Barnstaple
  • A 20-minute drive from Exmoor National Park; 50 minutes to Croyde Bay
  • Dog-friendly, no-frills camping with river views and grazing sheep
South Ford Farm Camping is a small, family-run site in north Devon, set peacefully alongside a river. Here you can get far, far away from the rat race to watch sheep grazing in the fields, paddle in the river and enjoy the sunset along with your evening barbecue (available to hire on site; wood and firepits also available). On clear nights, just lie back and watch the Milky Way twinkling far above. Watersports enthusiasts, this is a great base for you. The farm is a 50-minute drive from some of Devon’s most popular surfing beaches, including Saunton Sands, Croyde Bay and Woolacombe. You can explore the wild moorland of Exmoor National Park on foot, horseback or bike, and if the weather’s not co-operating for you, treat the kids to the indoor pool and climbing wall in South Molton, or give beekeeping a go at Quince Honey Farm. A 10-minute drive away, South Molton is your nearest town. Here you can pick up bits in the supermarket or root around artisan food stalls at the Pannier Market (every Thursday and Saturday). For big shopping trips (and restaurants serving all kinds of food) Barnstaple (25 minutes) is your best bet. This is a laidback, simple site with a handful of amenities, including a shower block, washing-up station and recycling facilities. Dogs are welcome, but please, not at pitches by the river.

What customers say

This well-kept campground offers spacious, private sites in a lovely, tranquil setting. Families especially enjoy the many kid-friendly activities, like a playground, river beach, and chances to help feed lambs. Facilities are always described as very clean, and many guests praise the helpful, friendly owners. A few note a need for more showers during peak times, but overall, it's a highly positive experience with many planning to return.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This campsite is an absolute must-visit – a hidden gem that’s hard to beat!

The pitches in the non-car area are perfectly flat (you could calibrate a spirit level on them 😄) and, even better, they’re spacious and well spread out. You’re not crammed in here – there’s room to breathe, stretch out, and feel truly at home. The whole site is calm, peaceful, and kept spotless – it’s the kind of place that lets you switch off and actually relax.

The facilities are simple yet spot-on. The toilets are in a metal shed for that rustic, back-to-basics feel – but they’re proper flushing loos, clean and modern. The showers are hot and reliable every time, with the bonus of a family wet room that makes life much easier with kids in tow.

Practical touches make a huge difference too: lockable charging cubes for phones and gadgets, a fridge for essentials, a great washing-up area, and WiFi if you really want to stay connected (though the atmosphere here almost dares you to switch off and enjoy the peace).

The kids are brilliantly catered for: a safe car-free zone with a play park, a little river with a sandpit, and space for football or badminton. Parents can finally relax knowing the kids are free to roam and play without worry.

And then there’s Chris – the beating heart of the place. From the first hello, he makes you feel like more than just a guest. He’s friendly, full of knowledge, and genuinely passionate about making sure everyone has the best possible stay. The morning and evening sheep-feeding sessions are a lovely touch (kids and adults alike loved them!), and you can just tell he enjoys running the site. Big shoutout to Chris – he’s what makes this place truly special.

Beyond the campsite, you’re spoiled for choice: a takeaway that delivers if you don’t feel like cooking, and two brilliant pubs close by for a proper meal and a pint.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had an amazing time at South Ford Farm. The facilities were spotless and well maintained. The little beach spot in the stream was perfect we little ones to have a safe splash and water toys were provided. The sand box was clean and again there were toys provided. The sheep feeding was a highlight for my son. He absolutely loved giving them tickles and hand feeding them. The pictcjes them selves were extremely well maintained and I loved that cars were kept in carparks as it made the site feel safer for little ones. The park had lots to offer and was suitable for a range of ages. We cant wait to return.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a wonderful stay here! The grounds are well kept, with a river nearby that’s perfect for children to play in. Facilities are great – there’s a badminton net, football goal, fridge/freezer, and charging station. Fire pits and wood are available at a very reasonable price.

The owners, especially Chris, are extremely welcoming and helpful. We stayed on the pitches without cars next to the tents, which was ideal as it felt safe for the children to play freely. The playground is excellent, and you can even buy fresh eggs straight from the farm.

WiFi is provided, but the internet is limited – which for us was actually a bonus, as it made the holiday wonderfully quiet and relaxing.

A fantastic place for families to enjoy the outdoors. Highly recommended!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A great campsite situated on an old farm next to a stream - there are choices of campsite near the stream or on the hill. The owners of this site take pride in their site and the facilities (including showers) are all well maintained, the toilets are even stocked with Andrex toilet paper! There are some animals on the farm and the owner has interactive sessions to feed the sheep with the children twice a day. The kids loved it.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had an amazing time at South Ford Farm! It is a perfect site for families with young kids but our teenagers also had a great time 😄. The local honey farm was a big hit. And we were able to hire a camp fire. Lovely family run site. Teenagers were happy with the Wi-Fi and charging points. Showers and toilets were clean and the site felt safe enough for the little ones to run around by themselves. And small enough so they couldn’t get lost! We are planning to return next year!

Disliked The only downside is that the site is on a fast country lane, which makes it difficult to get up to the shops without a car.

Primitive grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked South Ford Farm Camping was an unexpected highlight of our trip, so glad we stopped by! Chris was lovely, sweet with our little boy & super helpful.

The facilities there are top notch, everything you could think of. Fridge & freezer space is great in the little information cabin.

Our little boy loved the play equipment, badminton & little river beach. Having touches like the toilets having both big & small seats was appreciated & made our stay even easier.

We’ll be back :)
