  • Riverside site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant
  • A couple of minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot and 30 from Torquay
Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked: Location

Disliked: Service pitches were small, drain was set high so water didn’t drain away properly, only 1 toilet in shower block which was clean but dated.nice pub but very limited menu with fries being only option on most of the main courses so ordered side Salad as a side but that consisted of mixed leaves

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Everything was fantastic. Site was clean and spacious, plenty of hot water for showers.
The pub itself is just exceptional, staff couldn't do enough for us. Super dog friendly as well. Food was outstanding. Can't rate high enough.
People had said there was lots of road noise, but in fairness after around 9pm the road quietened down and was barely heard.
Would highly recommend a stay or even just a pub visit. As we will certainly be returning soon. There is very little phone signal on the site, however free WiFi at the pub, but this did not affect us at all in fact it was nice not to have phones beeping all the time!!

Liked: Lovely place. Brilliant facilities. Went for dinner inside the pub and had a few beers and was lovely. Can’t complain and will definitely be staying again.

Disliked: WiFi inside worked brilliantly. Didn’t reach me outside but had good enough signal for YouTube etc for the evening.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked: Clean park with good pitches, each separately devided by bushes.

Toilets are simple and clean

Disliked: Only one of each loo, so think would be a wait for ‘the morning wee’

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked: We had a touring and tent set up so had two pitches next to each other.
Site is easy to access and set up for a large tourer.

Toilets are clean and well maintained.

Hedges between each pitch are a nice to have.

Staff helpful and friendly.

Disliked: In peak season think there would be a wait for the loo. 1 boys and 1 girls with an addition of disabled loo.

As long as you don’t mind a bit of road noise too as main road can be heard but not off putting.

Local attractions

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
