  • Small family-run Devon site on the edge of the Blackdown Hills
  • Exeter and south coast beaches within a half-hour drive
  • Easy access from the M5 at Cullompton; walk to a pub and farm shop
Whether you fancy fishing, horse-drawn barge trips or climbing tors, Postwood Gardens Touring Campsite and Country Cabins makes for a fine base. This place is a small and peaceful family-run mid Devon site on the edge of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and five minutes’ drive from Cullompton. The name Cullompton may be familiar to frequent travellers along the M5, and indeed this site is a handy stopover just a few minutes’ drive from the motorway (or indeed from the A303/A30, 15 minutes’ drive away). That said, there’s plenty around to keep you occupied for several days if you choose to settle down for a longer break – this site is in prime position for surfing, fishing, moorland hikes, climbing the tors, beach days, family attractions, cycling outings… Handy amenities are easy to come by too, as Cullompton has a high street full of independent shops, a farmers’ market and a couple of supermarkets. Closer to home, there’s a farm shop in Fordmore or the pub and shop/post office in Kentisbeare, all within walking distance. Facilities here are simple, as you’d expect from a small site, but guests have access to male and female toilet and shower blocks, a chemical disposal point and a recycling area.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Clean and tidy facilities.
Only one female shower so not sure how it would be when busy but it's a good shower: great temperature and pressure!
Friendly arrival.
Feels safe.
Birds singing and a quiet nights sleep.
Level pitches.
Good value for money.
A friendly chicken!!!

Disliked: It's a small site so not too many places to hide if thats what youre after. If you have a camping pitch or an electric vehicle pitch I think you're against the hedge (I think) which gives a bit more privacy but otherwise in the open.
Be nice to have a shelf or seat in the shower (it does have two hooks)

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The first impression we had of Postwood was that it was so quiet. We were warmly welcomed by Laura, who was easy going and empathetic,as we had struggled with various issues with our motothome prior to arriving. She immediately put us at ease. Tor later inroduced himself and kindly offered a few suggestions to help fix our motorhome.

The tall trees surrounding the area were a welcome sight as was the calming sound of birdsong.
The shower was powerful and the site had all necessary amenities on hand.

It was less than a mile to two very hospitable country inns serving good food. There was also a farmshop/deli/cafe within a short cycling distance...worth visiting for morning coffee and cake!
All this at an extremely reasonable and accessible price.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Postwood and we look forward to visiting again...whenever we need to slow down and recharge.
Thank you so much Laura and Tor. X

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Very large mainly flat field. Chickens roaming around was lovely. Peaceful. Not much road noise so we slept well and only one other camper on site.
Fine for a stop off just for a nights sleep on a long drive.

Disliked: It is basic. The toilets could do with a deep clean, the sinks and the toilets themselves were ok but there’s lots of dead flies and cobwebs, the shower curtain was mouldy and brown and there were a pair of old exfoliating gloves left in there. We didn’t use the shower. Plus it looked like the whole bathroom had just been hosed down, only one toilet roll which was soaking wet but luckily we had our own.
When we arrived there was a young lad mowing the grass, absolutely fine (appreciate it needs to be done at some point) but continued to mow around us for another hour at least which was intrusive after a long drive and churned up literally hundreds of horse flies and midges.

From the manager: You could complimented us on our well maintained site, but have chosen to complain about it. The young lad from the village comes every week without fail. But he can only come once a week and he must cut the grass whenever he can and weather permitting regardless of who is here, It must get cut. We can't not stop it because guest arrive. In days it can grow so much and then the field is damp to walk on under thick grass As to him upsetting horse flys and midges you are the first person to ever mention them being a problem on our site and they don't live or land on lawns if there were. So he certainly cant be blamed for that. As to the toilet block, again you could have complimented us on deep cleaning the toilet blocks regularly, but again have chosen to see the worst. We had had a wedding anniversary with 100 odd people using the toilets just days before. We came in and deep cleaned the toilets. You certainly would have complained if we hadnt cleaned it. As for cobwebs, this time of year the spiders make there way inside and as soon as we clean cobwebs they are back. Shower curtains are replaced yearly at the start of the season not at the end of it.

Great night with friends in a lovely location.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice size pitches. Info texted to you with how to get in and contact info etc. All very simple. Having the cockerels about was fun. Was concerned about them being noisy in the early hours but didn’t hear a thing.
Shower and toilet ok.

Disliked: Could hear the road but not to bad.

Local attractions

It might be that you’re a savvy fisher already or you’re looking to dip your toes in for the first time. Either way, with Goodiford Mill Fishery (five minutes’ drive) practically around the corner, you’ll be well-set here. It’s just one of a few places close by that make up a unique set of holiday activities – these include the working Coldharbour Mill’s interactive museum (10 minutes), driving real-life diggers at Diggerland Devon (10 minutes) or the family-friendly assault course challenge on The Bear Trail (10 minutes). These activities already make some good action for any kids in your group, but Crealy Theme Park (20 minutes) has much more on that front, as does a good horse-drawn barge trip down the Tiverton Canal (15 minutes) or a detour to the entertainment facilities in Exeter city centre (25 minutes). A natural playground can be found at Sidmouth beach (half an hour). There’s kayaking or canoeing rental here but for cycling and walking (off the coastal path, that is), Exmoor National Park (35 minutes) is a sound choice. Historical sites also live on around here and that includes the National Trust’s Killerton (15 minutes), a huge 18th-century estate, and the Victorian Knightshayes Court (20 minutes), both royally good for walks and picnics.
