  • Small family-run touring site in the village of Sidlesham
  • A 10-minute drive from Chichester and south coast beaches
  • Simple, well-kept pitches; pub two minutes' walk away
As one might guess from the name, Bucket and Spade is close to the coast – about 10 minutes’ drive from the beaches of Bracklesham Bay, West Wittering, East Wittering and Selsey, in fact. This touring site's handy location means you can spend many a day bouncing around between different coastal corners, trying out watersports, building sandcastles, paddling and taking walks through the dunes along the shoreline. Being slightly inland means that this site also has the advantage of being surrounded by splendid West Sussex countryside for walks and other outdoor activities (with the handy bonus of there being a pub two minutes’ walk from the site for a drink and some food at the end of the day if you want…) For other eating options you may like to head up into Chichester, which is 10 minutes’ drive away and has plenty of places to pick from (and a whole bunch of things to see and do as well, of course). Life on site is fairly simple, with the facilities stretching just to toilets, showers and a washing-up area. It’s all nicely maintained though, with plenty of space and trees to give shade, privacy and a bit of colour.

Liked: A lovely well kept site. Toilet/shower block very clean. 2 large all in one shower/ toilet/sink cubicles and a single toilet room. Good facilities for a small site. Hardstanding ground was very level and our pitch area was very large and spacious. We didn’t use the outdoor space as our stay was in October after the clock change. But during the summer months it would be perfect. Owners very friendly. Very quiet site, although the nearby road could be loud sometimes but didn’t bother us at all. Good location to local areas. There are no children’s play areas at this site. There is no WiFi at the site and it states this in the facilities list however the 4g was excellent so our children were happy once we got back to the site. All in all a very pleasant happy few days at this site and would definitely book again.

Liked: It's a small site at the time of our visit quite with few people staying
Nice clean warm shower block
Lots of places to visit close by for walkers and bus stop just 2 mins up the road. Easy to find site

Disliked: The road noise may be disliked by some but did not effect us
The elsan point could also better with a floor point as I had to help a fellow camper with his waste water on to the bench

Rusty shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: It is a handy place to stay and does that well, there is good, clean, well kept amenities for everyone but don't expect activities or a play park, it isn't that type of place.
Nicely Small site, only 3 huts and maybe 8 pitches for vans/tents but they are all massive and those in pitches can park in.
Good location for Chichester and the beaches 10-15 mins drive either way.
Clean and safe.
Lots of space to play in a dedicated fenced off pitch.
Pitch is furthest from the main road.
Fantastic view across a sunflower field, lovely to wake up to!
Bathroom and shower in hut a real bonus with kids. There are also communal facilities only 50yds away.
Owner was only a text away and lives onsite , on call but didn't bother us which was perfect, even offered us tea bags kindly.
Beds were comfy although as another person said bring own pillows as very thin but would do the job.
Main double bed is large and comfy but a jump up onto it just to beware if trouble would need a step.
Kids loved the two pod beds, bottom one fine for any age, top one our 6yr old was ok but I wouldn't put younger kids in it as the ladder needs to be moved to access the bathroom rather than it fixed to the side so usable all the time, just to note.
Electric car gate with code keeps everyone secure.
People said main road busy but we really didn't notice it even at night.

Disliked: Local pub the Anchor is nice to sit out and have a drink after a long day but average food, nothing special, I recommend booking Billy's on the beach or takeaway from mobys fish and chips, both lovely!
We stayed end of summer season so needs a little refresh/ maintenance which I listed to the owner so weren't blamed for anything and the owner noted, apologised and said they will pick up or can provide /fix if we wanted immediately which was kind, so expect all sorted out now.
Wasn't clear in listing you can't park beside the hut, you can drop off then park at front of site- 50yds max but with children and lots of stuff and not much space in hut that would be a bonus to have car beside you and we were able to as pitch next door wasn't in use but, can't normally to note.

If you are using a satnav you may find that it takes you past the site. It's about 100 yards past the Anchor pub on the right, so look out for the pub on your left and the thatched cottage. If you reach the garage on the right-hand side you have gone too far.

Local attractions

And so to the beach – perhaps with a bucket and spade for the sandy stretch at West Wittering or some watersports kit for surfing or kitesurfing at Bracklesham Bay (both 10 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, take walks around the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (five minutes) or out to Selsey Bill (10 minutes), or go wildlife-spotting at Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve (15 minutes). To get a sense of the area’s history, a trip to Weald & Downland Living Museum (15 minutes) is a must – the various exhibits, demonstrations and buildings are great for getting kids intrigued in times gone by. There’s more history to soak up at Fishbourne Roman Palace (10 minutes) and around Chichester (10 minutes), where top recommendations include the cathedral, Pallant House Gallery and Festival Theatre. For alternative activities, perhaps you’d fancy playing a round at Chichester Golf Club (five minutes) – or maybe sampling the top-notch sparkling wines on a tour and tasting at Tinwood Estate vineyard (15 minutes).
