A welcoming, tidy adult-only site with private, level pitches, often treed. Hosts are noted for helpfulness & thoughtful touches. Facilities generally clean & good. Convenient for Lake District exploring. Some note A-road noise & steep pitch walks, balanced by privacy.

Small hillside primitive grass tent campsite
Liked Malcolm and Ann-Marie were lovely. They went out of their way to greet us and make sure the site was to our liking. Our stay in the Shepherd's Hut was lovely, it had all necessary amenities and was very comfortable. The campsite was again great, with clear, nearby toilet and drinking water facilities and a private element to each pitch. There was a lovely ginger kitty who greeted us in the morning! Would recommend to anyone wanting to stay around the Windermere area with a vehicle :)

From the manager: Thanks for the glowing review and we're pleased you very much enjoyed your stay so I'll trying to count that as a 10.
Sadly anything less than an overall score of 10 degrades our long term site score of 9.6 which we've successfully maintained for a number of years and won multiple Pitchup awards for. I wonder if it's a Pitchup error.

Small hillside primitive grass tent campsite
Liked Amazing little campsite just outside of Windemere! Bus stop is a 5 minute walk away meaning that getting into town is a breeze. Campsite has great facilities and the owners are so friendly! Great views from the campsite, and you can be out in the wild within 5 minutes as footpaths and trails are close by. Would 100% recommend.

Great camping trip with some slight issues but overall we enjoyed it!!
Small hillside primitive grass tent campsite
Liked We had a great stay at this campsite over the bank holiday weekend.
The owners welcomed us and explained all the facilities and directions. Very nice people. Each tent pitch has their own firepit and you can buy wood and fire staters from the owner.
Amazing views from the pitches, surrounded by Christmas trees.
We really enjoyed the outdoor shower and the phone charging facilities.
Pub and shop just across the road.
Also bus stops just outside the camp site which is perfect to get to all the local villages. The stops have all the times and bus numbers on. I recommend getting the 555. They are stagecoach and £3 single trip where ever you go or £12 for a day ticket.
Disliked Unfortunately had to cut our trip short due to a family issue but also the fact that we lost a lot of sleep the night before.
At 3am we was woke up to someone pitching us which mean a lot of scuffing of tents and air beds. Even when they had finished putting up their tents they then started snoring excessively loud to the point myself and another person was shouting trying to get them to shut up. It was very frustrating having already been woken up by them.
We was also disappointed with the cleaning facilities- there wasn’t any (unless we just couldn’t find them) I was having to clean our pots from the open taps near the tent with no hot water. Wasn’t ideal.
The Hill to the pitches were also a nightmare, not ideal for the elderly or disabled. Be prepared for the hill and carting your belongs up on trolleys.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, albeit disappointing.
The pair next to you arrived that night at 12.30 not 3.30. I know this because I escorted them to their pitch and asked them to set up quietly . I'm not responsible for their snoring.
The washing up station is at the top of the hill as shown on the massive poster with map in the car park. You actually took a picture from the top of the hill so you must have seen it, everyone else does. Plus we tell everyone where all the taps, washing up, toilets etc are when you arrive.
As for the hill, it's all on the description of you care to read it. I'm 59 and I can get up there very easily. I think if you were elderly or disabled you wouldn't book a 'Small Hillside' pitch - or at least you'd be careful to inspect the details and reviews.
Nice site, but too much hassle getting the gear up the hill.
Small hillside primitive grass tent campsite
Liked The individual pitches, the close proximity to the pub, the fire pits, the trees and the facilities although basic, adequate. Friendly Owners, Helpfull. Phone charging unit. Handy bus service to Windermere.
Disliked Road noise, the track up the steep hill with a drag trolley, should be more detailed information on this, you are ok if you only have a small amount of gear and small tent, it’s a very steep path up to the tent pitches and not for people who struggle with fitness. Cost of beer and food in pub, expensive.

From the manager: Thanks for the review.
You seemed very happy when you were here but it seems you had a really bad time.
We don't write the description of the site. That's down to Pitchup. It mentions walking up a steep hill and recommends light gear and compact tents. I can't make people read the description before they book but I recommend they do for the best experience.
We're not responsible for the price of food or beer at the pub down the road - The Watermill. I suggest you take that up with them rather than reflect it in our review score.
Most of our customers 80% give us a 10. That had been our standard score for years, which is why we have multiple awards at an average score of 9.6 or 9.7.
The perfect camping spot
