  • Quiet, peaceful rural site with stunning views over Eskdale Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Wast Water; 25 minutes to Scafell Pike
  • Pick your own pitch; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Flushing toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside). This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Jonnty is a super host at the barn campsite, very knowledgeable about the local area and he literally can’t do enough for you, the campsite itself is very well kept with a friendly vibe and the shower and toilet facilities are very clean, we pitched up and relaxed with a bbq and a fire in the evening and into the night, then woke up early to go walking and take in the stunning views and see all the local wildlife, I honestly couldn’t recommend high enough.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A short drive to the very beautiful and quiet Eksdale route up Scarfell Pike.
The facilities were great, a number of hot gas powered showers, toilets and washing up areas.
Jonty was very friendly and happy to help with anything.
We did not have enough camping chairs for everybody, but there were spares that we could borrow which was very helpful.
Firepits available to borrow.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I recently stayed at this campsite and had a fantastic experience. From the moment we arrived, everything was well-organised and easy to navigate. The check-in process was smooth, and the staff, were hugely friendly and helpful.

The facilities really stood out—clean toilets and showers, well-maintained grounds, and plenty of space between pitches for privacy. There was also a convenient place to purchase or even borrow essentials, which came in handy. The location was peaceful and scenic, perfect for a relaxing getaway, and there were some lovely walking trails nearby.

Overall, mine and a friends family had a very good stay and felt comfortable and well looked after throughout. I would definitely recommend this campsite to others looking for a clean, quiet, and well-equipped place to enjoy the outdoors.

Disliked: Honestly, there wasn't anything really bad about the campsite. It had everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. I’d happily return and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a well-equipped and peaceful camping spot.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The whole set up of the campsite was great. The shelter for eating was very useful on our arrival day, as well as having a decent amount of showers and toilet to use. They were always clean and well stocked. The owner of the campsite Jonty was such a legend. He was helpful, personable and very knowledgeable about the area. The pub down the road was amazing to drink and eat at. Will definitely be staying there again. A great find.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The campsite was firstly very welcoming, Johnty met us at the gate even in the rain, gave us a quick run over how the place worked and let us get sorted. He was very friendly throughout the stay and has plenty of great ideas for hikes in the area or other activities if you’re short. Small metal fire pits were available to use which is a great touch and showed why the field itself was very clean and a nice place to be. The view from the field is also spectacular along with a nice covered area you could socialise in if the weather was poor. The toilets and showers as well as the site in general were all very clean.

Local attractions

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
