Some might say that the best way to explore 'God’s own country' is to walk its dales and moors, taking in Yorkshire’s spectacular rural landscapes from a hiking trail. If that all sounds a little too energetic, you might prefer to experience the splendours of this region from the peaceful setting of Raker Lakes Caravan Park. This adults-only (and pleasantly peaceful) caravan site occupies 28 lush acres of meticulously landscaped countryside to the south-east of York (20 minutes’ drive). The vibe here is very much one of quiet contemplation, with the main on-site activity being fishing. Raker Lakes has five bodies of water, including Kingfisher Lake, a specimen lake where you can catch carp weighing upwards of 20 pounds. If breaking records isn't important to you, Highbank Lake or intimate Heron Pond, both fringed by dense vegetation and both stocked with carp and perch, might be more up your street. Level hardstanding and grass pitches with electric hook-up are shaded by leafy trees and sheltered by tall hedges, and have access to modern toilets and shower facilities. The nearest shop is just under a mile away, in the village of Wheldrake (a short car drive or a 15-minute walk), which also has a traditional pub serving food and a café. Anglers travelling with fishing-averse partners might have to relent and agree to the occasional walk. Consider heading to Wheldrake Ings Nature Reserve (five minutes), a nesting ground for waders, or to Allerthorpe Common Nature Reserve (10 minutes), which is home to woodpeckers and roe deer.

This quiet, clean campsite offers beautiful scenery and nice fishing lakes, perfect for leisurely walks. Spacious pitches and friendly, helpful owners. While facilities are mostly clean, some guests found more showers and toilets would be welcome. Daytime road noise from motorbikes was mentioned, but it usually quieted down at night. Great location for exploring York and local spots.

Liked Level hard standing /gravel and grass pitch. Water and elec on pitch elec metered approx £2 for 24hrs. Toilets and showers spotless and huge.

Liked Lovely stay for the last 2 nights shower and toilet spotless and clean. The chap that runs the site was around regularly and friendly. We will be back

Liked Very easy, laid back check in. Paid balance on arrival. They don't take card so please remember this if you book. Toilets and shower not too far away. Nice little walk into the village. Lovely scenic location. Would definitely book again. 👍
Ventured to the cricket club a short walk from the site and found it to be super friendly and cheap prices too. Perfect if the weather is good to sit outside. 🍻

Disliked Whilst it wouldn't stop me booking again, it's quite close to the main road and given that there's a big motorbike presence in the area it can be loud from quite early in the morning. We stayed Saturday to Sunday and you can hear bikes from around 6.30 to 7am. The pub in the village is very quiet, even on a Saturday afternoon we were literally the only people in there.

Liked Lovely site, very neat and maintained. Shower & 2 toilets always clean.
Previous reviews mentioned the road noise if you go expecting this then not a problem. Sunday the bike noise starts early just roll back over in bed & ignore it.

Liked Good location with easy access.
Clean toilet and shower facilities.
Although I'm not into fishing I did notice the nearby ponds looked busy .
Good pub around a mile away .

Disliked Nothing, the only irritation was the numerous ( and noisy ) motorbikes passing the site during daylight hours.

Liked Well kept site, toilets and showers lovely and clean, very friendly and helpful owners.

Disliked Noise from traffic on nearby road. It’s a shame drivers and bikers feel the need to rip down country lanes at such high speeds.

On a former RAF site in Elvington, the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial (five minutes’ drive) displays military aircraft, including a Spitfire and a Messerschmitt, plus reconstructions and replicas of other planes. There's also a vintage-style cinema showing archive newsreels from the war years. Among the museums in York (20 minutes) are the National Railway Museum and the JORVIK Viking Centre, which illustrates life in York in the 10th century. After a stroll past the half-timbered houses lining the Shambles, head to York Minster and climb up the tower for far-reaching views of the city.
