  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub in Marske-by-the-Sea
  • Five minutes' drive from the beach; North York Moors 20 minutes
  • Back to basics setting with a small play area and inflatables
Looking for a back to basics setting for your family getaway, and somewhere that's just five minutes' drive from the beach? Make up your base in the grounds of a family pub at New Marske Sports Club, a small, simple and family-oriented site just across the A174 from the North Yorkshire village of Marske-by-the-Sea. The kids always have options for playtime, with a small play area and inflatables on site. When it's time for some quality family time, move to the on-site bar or beer garden with plenty of shaded seating. The beer garden is family-friendly and does not permit big groups. Firepits are also available to hire from the site. The beaches of Marske-by-the-Sea and Redcar are a five- and 10-minute drive away respectively. The former, a dog-friendly sandy stretch backed by dunes, is popular for watersports (if you can brave the chilly North Sea) and fishing; the latter is also sandy, with occasional rockpools teeming with marine life. If you’re not up for sand between your toes, you might prefer to hike on the trails lacing Errington Wood (10 minutes’ walk), from where you can take in views of the coast; or try to improve your handicap at Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club (five minutes’ drive). The pub serves traditional British food, but if you prefer to prepare your own meals, barbecues are allowed too. You can source basic provisions in the on-site food shop, or there’s a large supermarket in Redcar (10 minutes’ drive). In addition to the toilets in the pub, there is a toilet block and showers for the camping field, plus charging and recycling facilities.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Inflatables for the kids but overpriced

Leaving the campsite and being safe at home

Staff were friendly when we arrived

Disliked: The clientele in the place were unbelievable. Children were left to their own devices and were to what could only be described as feral (that's putting it nicely). Abusive towards our children swearing and threatening to 'batter' them. They must have been 7 years old. No parent or caregiver in site.
No warden at night checking that residents were behaving and being considerate to others. A group next to us were awake shouting, screaming and swearing at 3am.

The place ran out of chips, then food all together so had to order a takeaway. Probably a good thing as the kitchen was minging.

Free for all in terms of where you pitched.

Not many ladies toilets

The track down to the site was hard to access both ways and not well maintained

The slide on the park wasn't safe to use

Didn't feel safe to have a normal family friendly camping experience - couldn't let our kids freely play and make friends, which they normally do.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (small)

Liked: Cheap pricing

Disliked: It's cheap for a reason!!
Showers blocked. Loos not very clean. Ran out of loo roll in all 3 cubicles.
Litter everywhere due to lack of bins.
Too close to a main road so regular traffic noise through the night.
Despite there being a 10:30pm "quiet time" rule, it wasn't enforced. When I stayed there was a particularly noisy group arguing that kept lots of the site up until past 3am!! Apparently security (which I didn't see at all during my stay) took them offside at this time, but it was too little too late unfortunately.

From the manager: Toilets are cleaned hourly and toilet roll re stocked. You are given a bin bag on arrival and showed exactly where the bins are for you to dispose of rubbish.

If you didn't see any security that because you was following the onsite rules and you didn't need to be approached.

Some Toilets & Showers where down for less than an hour to a drain blockage. This was delt with immediately after we seen the issue when cleaning the Toilets and showers.

Issue you've stated was resolved by 1am. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do. When issues or situations happen we deal with the prompley and accordingly.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Great location not far from home inflatables were great for kids, little overpriced but you pay it to keep kids happy and quiet. Good food was lovely

Disliked: Price of inflatables per child per day should be lowered £12 per child per day travelled with few children so ended up costly for the full weekend

Local attractions

You’d better have your best hiking boots with you, for North York Moors National Park – with its heather-covered hills and stream-laced woodlands – is within easy reach (20 minutes’ drive). Woodpeckers, grouse and tawny owls call this vast expanse of moorland home, so this is a top spot for birdwatchers. There is also mountain biking to be done, plus stargazing. Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens (half an hour) includes the atmospheric ruins of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery (with a reconstructed monk’s cell) and a manor house with Arts and Crafts furnishings, such as an original William Morris carpet. And don’t forget to take a stroll through the grounds, with seasonal highlights like springtime bluebells and red autumn maples. The wetlands at RSPB Saltholme (35 minutes) are dotted with hides so you can observe lapwings, peregrine falcons and water rails as they go about their nesting and feeding business. While you’re there, you’ll also be able to take in views of the imposing Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge.
